Gordon's video is the postmodern condition exemplified. It's all about the spectacle (of making a fucking grilled cheese sandwich no less), the actual sandwich is irrelevant. You are being presented and sold the idea of a sandwich, the presentation of a sandwich. The sandwich itself doesn't actually exist in that it's not really what we would consider a grilled cheese sandwich, nobody in their right mind would accept this in a restaurant, nobody would go to the trouble of actually making this because they're hungry or peckish for a grilled cheese sandwich. No, a grilled cheese sandwich is more than the sum of its parts, it combines to become something pleasant. What Gordon produced is less than the sum of its parts, it has been worsened, it isn't even a Frankenstein of a grilled cheese sandwich, it is a series of ingredients slapped together and seared in the interest of marketing and brand recognition: a simulacrum.

he's making a croque monsieur you fucking retards. you can see in the video that he's using different ingredients, why would you think he's just making the same thing more fancy. besides that in many of his shows he complains about peoples dishes being pretencious, if anything he's a hack for being too traditional and not exploring original, non-traditional flavors.

There's no ham on Gordon's sandwich. Also he advertised it as a "grilled cheese" in the title of the video.

>> No.15892276

>>15892261
He also said in the video that he was making a grilled cheese or, what it was called in Bongland when he was growing up, cheese on toast (even though that isn't normally served as a sandwich). There is no way out of this; this isn't anything but a completely deranged, marketing-infused husk of a grilled cheese.

Mayo, why? Also grilled cheese is simple, comfort food. You can make it fancier by substituting other cheeses to make it but Gordon used the wrong cheese, bread, and method to make his sandwich.

>> No.15893586

>>15893570
No fucking shit, dummy. I wasn't saying Gordon's was good, but that there was merit to the way he prepared it in Chef. It was over the top sure, but not every grilled cheese has to be plastic bullshit. And mayo is a redneck substitute for butter.

>> No.15893605

>>15893570
>Mayo, why?
Because mayo is super easy to spread, tastes good and browns like butter or oil.

Gordon's recipe would have worked if he had used a more even cooking method (fucking cast iron in a fireplace lmao) and grated/chopped up the cheese into smaller pieces. Or cook it smarter by toasting the the first slice of the bread with the cheese open-faced style then top with the other and flip to finish toasting.

What is it to you? Postmodern is a vague umbrella term that describes many things, but mainly an opposition of "modern"(as in, Renesance, Humanist, etc.) ideas, or just "grand ideas" in general. It often describes a tone of irony and an abstract style. I dont see how a cynical Youtube video is necessarily "postmodern", let alone "the postmodern condition exemplified". Also, why should I explain my interpretation of "postmodern", (You) should explain what you meant more clearly!

>> No.15894146

>>15894018
Sorry, I didn't mean it as a "no u", but I wanted to get a clearer understanding of what your understanding of postmodernism is because that helps me respond to you and it also helps prevent me from responding to people who use cultural marxism to refer to posmodernism and other, unrelated fields.

As you said, postmodernism encompasses many things and it can't neatly be pinned down to one single definition. Its break with modernity and the enlightenment is certainly a recurring theme, and the skepticism of grand narratives falls into that. But there are also the concepts of the simulacrum and hyperreality, which Baudrillard introduced. In postmodernity, we are thought to be living under these concepts in general. The media (like Youtube) and how it purports to represent a reality is itself a key part of this. It goes beyond inauthenticity because there's nothing to even be authentic to anymore. I refer to an ideal grilled cheese sandwich to which I compare Gordon's attempt, but even that is a simulacrum because my image of a grilled cheese has been shaped by media representations, consumerism, marketing. So, of course, has Gordon's. What makes his act a great example of this is that he adds to the collection of concepts in the most obviously inauthentic way. The sandwich becomes completely secondary to the marketing effort, it's only there to fuel his brand, and so is everything else in that video, except for the involuntary fuckup that he can't admit or even see or doesn't even care about because he cultivates, again, a brand of seeming perfection and infallibility. From what I understand, this is postmodern in the sense of Baudrillard.

But maybe Gordon's act isn't especially postmodern. I do feel like it's a more salient example than what I normally see. Maybe because of the irony and the hypocrisy? That is a kind of breaking of a metanarrative: that of Gordon as this perfect chef who always scolds others and then fucks up such a simple dish.
