I think the fundamental reason for general suffering in the modern world is humans no longer need each other. By that I mean your basic needs of food, warmth, shelter and water in the 1st world are pretty much trivial. You will never put your life on the line for another person to get those things, like how we lived for millenia before founding civilisations. Humans are built for a lifestyle that no longer exists, we developed too fast too soon and can't reconcile our out of date genetics and the wonders of technology that surround us. And the really annoying thing is there's no other species to look to to see a way out. So I eat.
