Le grille means 'grid' while la grille can mean 'fence', 'screen', or 'grill'. Griller means 'toast' though, so it could mean a grilled cheese, but I doubt it does. I'm just conversational in French, so take this with a grain of salt.

"le grille" doesn't mean anything, "le gril" is like the broiler function of your oven or, as you tried to say, a grid that you use on an open fire
grid would translate into "une grille", as in crosswords.
Also work more on the difference between definite and indefinite pronouns.
Not sure if there's any translation in French for grilled cheese. Since you don't actually grill the cheese there would not be a reference to that, I refer to it as a hamless croque-monsieur (for people who don't top it with bechamel)

the is le/la and a is un/une
using a definite pronoun is an old French restaurant habit, to add something personal and pompous about a common dish, but everybody would use the indefinite, un grilled cheese.

I can never eat just a grilled cheese. That's why croque monsieur is better. Even a patty melt. But it must have something more than just cheese
