Because I’ve had this many times, from tins to gourmet bakeries and every time I’m left confused as to why Brits love it. It’s extremely buttery, somewhat dry, just awful. Not disgusting but it’s something I would really never eat because why take this crumbling hunk of butter over something like a basic chocolate chip cookie. There’s very little nuance or flavor. I’m sure millionaire’s shortbread is better, but that’s because there are two layers of caramel and chocolate on top which will add actual flavor and distract you from the lower shortbread portion which has likely greased your fingers and fallen all over your counter.

IMO millionaire shortbread is way worse. It shits on the shortbread flavour by adding some tacky caramel and chocolate. If I wanted that I'd just eat chocolates by themselves. It probably is more your thing though, seeing as you seem to dislike simple biscuits.
