How spicy is too spicy?

>> No.15842253

The instant it goes beyond being flavor and starts being painful.

This. Past a certain point the food just starts to taste "hot" and it drowns out everything else.

This is not a set point. You acclimate to pungency with repeated exposure and it becomes less hot for (you)

It's not a flavor, anyways, it's a pain response. Capsaicin makes the cells in your mucous membranes think that they're actually on fire. It's the same reason it burns when you shit out spicy food. It's already just a pain response, and the amount of spice you can handle is a matter of pain tolerance. The stuff you think is flavorful, is just stuff to which you've built a tolerance and can actually pay attention to the other flavors. Like, habaneros are actually pretty sweet, once you can ignore the pain response.

That's if you're thinking of "spicy" without recognizing where the heat is coming from. Cayenne has flavor, jalapenos have flavor, scotch bonnets have flavor.

Mapo tofu is weird spicy, since it uses those fucky peppers that sting the inside of your mouth, instead of the normal pepper burn

no spice is too spicy. spice brings something to the experience of the meal. some of the 'spiciest' meals i've had turned into moments of clarity which made it all worth it. life is about struggle and a little spice is not going to hurt you. try something crazy hot sometime. it's fun.

When you don't like the taste of the food because it's too spicy. It's pretty personal. And you can learn to eat spicier food if you want to. And less spicier food too. Spices can be also added later so I think it's better not to make the food too spicy if people don't like it spicy. Can't take the spices off from the food, but you can always add them.

extracts that are just pure spicy with a metallic aftertaste. Other than that, there isn't too spicy. The body gets used to it. capsacin expels parasites out of the gut as well. It's good in moderation.

At some level, the gut can't tolerate capsaicin. It will cause massive stomach cramping and/or diarrhea. Your taste glands and asshole glands can adapt quickly, but your digestive system can't.

Habaneros are my general upward limit. I can enjoy the heat, but with especially fresh ones you can catch some fruit notes that pair well with red wine reductions, pineapple, caramelized onion and oddly enough with green olives, goat cheese and a touch of honey over any bread/crackers.

I like the sensation of spicy food and stuff like chilis and vinegary hot sauces add lot of flavor but some food is a damn chore to enjoy

>> No.15851534

Some local Indian joints give me the #5. Had to ask for it with a wink and a nod. Ended up developing a tolerance to their hottest dishes. I always have cayenne pepper, 2 or three hot sauces, habanero and jalapenos in the kitchen.
