Post and discuss MREs

Why are MREs so expensive when they are just over-glorified Chef Boyardeen?

Covid got the preppers antsy so they bought all the surplus MREs that used to be $70/case so now they're twice that.

MREs are the only decent shelf stable meals that I've eaten.

Sure you can make your own survival shit but it will last nowhere near as long in storage as a MRE.

Mountain House is good for that but boy is it expensive. Or you can buy a bucket of freeze-dried emergency slop if you just want calories.

MRE chocolate peanut butter spread is god-tier. One packet kills my sugar/chocolate craving, only 150 calories, and 7 g carbs. Great for keto.

I honestly wanted to buy a box of them with my stimulus for the gimmick and because I want to camp soon and thought it'd be fun to bring a couple so I could hike somewhere and eat a quick meal without having to lug my cooking equipment and food with me. But yeah, prices are dumb.

Also you pay for the packaging and development they put into making a nutritionally decent meal that's shelf stable, it can't have too much salt or too much sugar, and you get an okay amount of food. Compared to canned or frozen meals which have multiple servings with over 100% recommended sodium and sugar usually.

Yes. During my last military deployment in '09, we had MREs from the invasion in '03 and maybe even older than that date, Country Captain Chicken w/noodles still tasted better than alot of other bullshit.
