I've been working on a simple recipe website https://recipeasly.org/ after the original recipeasly shut down. It doesn't have ads or life stories, just simple directions. I'm trying to keep it fairly minimal, but would be happy for any ideas regarding features. Currently, I'm working on:
Star rating system for each recipe
Comments
Submission form, so people can easily upload
Getting more public domain pictures, will hold a competition in the future offering cash prize to whoever can make and photograph the most recipes.

Any thoughts?

No life life story essay is already good enough but that all sounds fine. Keep it simple

Automatic density conversions for basics like flour, butter, sugar.

Are you going to have multiple versions of the same recipe?

>> No.15772386

>>15772372
Yeah, if people submit different versions that's fine. Hence a rating for each recipe.

This is pretty great
I recommend a small description field so people can get an idea of the intended end product a little more

>> No.15773324

good stuff OP. I agree about a title/description field in the gallery view could be helpful.
I use https://foodgawker.com/ a lot for finding recipes currently, I like their layout lot. Would be great to have a no ads/no bs version of that site.

I wouldn't mind ads honestly. As long as there are no shit life stories. Best of luck to you anon!

What's your operational model? Who's paying for the servers. Who will be paying you for your time?

>> No.15773673

At the moment I'm just paying for it myself. It's running off the VPS I also use for my blog. If people want to donate, they're welcome to of course. Otherwise, I haven't thought far enough ahead as to monetizing it.

>Star rating system for each recipe
Bullshit, taste is subjective and you won't get anything out. Besides, how will you keep people from fucking with the rating system? Creating accounts? Congratulations, you just made the website more complex without adding value.

>Comments
You're just moving the "life story" part to after the recipe. I don't care what a housewife in the middle of bumfuck nowhere thinks about the recipe and how her husband likes it.

>Submission form, so people can easily upload
Good luck finding someone who will moderate this mess.

>Getting more public domain pictures
Why? One is plenty.

Stop sucking Luke Smith's dick so much, or at least keep this on >>>/g/. Pls go and stay go.

I put this up before luke smith put his based.cooking website up, despite just being myself and him having 71 contributors. Though I admit I got the idea from his video on the topic.

And it's only one picture per recipe, but there's lot of recipes without any pictures yet. So I was thinking of holding a contest

Thank you others have mentioned that to me also, so I might try adding it in.

>I put this up before luke smith put his based.cooking website up
Yeah, because a video of him complaining about such websites preceeded his hosting his own.

>despite just being myself and him having 71 contributors
Then maybe contribute to that project? I don't see any value in fragmentation.

>there's lot of recipes without any pictures yet. So I was thinking of holding a contest
Contests only make sense when your audience has become big enough. As of now, I bet that it's double digit at best. Besides, that also means more organization. Your best bet at the moment would be to include a placeholder. Something like, "Got an image? Send it to webmaster@somewebsite.com".

Well, thank for for the criticism. But I'm happier doing my own thing and making something that's easy to use, and not weighed down by being "based" or not. He has his own views on site design, JS, and the like. So there's room for multiple sites.

Figure that out or don't waste your time.
If you don't want to take advertising revenue, what value are you providing that people would pay for?

stupid comparison
You have to scroll through the dumb mommy blog shit on most sites to get to the recipe, here you would have to go out of your way to get to what people are saying after the recipe

I don't mind if it's free/donation only. I have a full-time job and enough crypto saved up that it's not really an issue.

Haven't done any marketing, so I don't get many emails yet, except friends and family. But when the site and automated submission form are complete, I'll buy some ads through the brave browser.

Being able to automatically adjust the recipe scale is a good feature. I think curation beyond a star rating from users is a good idea, prevent the site from being flooded with shit. Especially as a small site with little traffic that could kill you early. Having an approval system would help with that.

>It doesn't have ads or life stories, just simple directions
This is a great idea but I feel like people who think like us are in the minority. I don't give a fuck that your grandma used to show you how to do this. But I remember watching the food networks next big star or whatever their reality show was called and they would make the contestants tell stories about why the food mattered. Which I guess is what the main audience of the food network wants. That and competition shows which have taken over the network instead of actual instructional shows.

Part of it too is that recipes are public domain, so by padding out each recipe with stories gives them some IP and more ad space on their page.
>>15774554
And yeah, I'll definitely do that. Working on a script to take submission form data, and put it into a html that I'll review, before making live.

>> No.15774888

>>15774599
Life stories can come AFTER the recipe for all I care, because I probably am not going to scroll past the end of the recipe anyway

>> No.15774933

Looks cool.
I have some ideas.
As a part of the attribution note, I would personally appreciate it if the type of the source was stated. That source type could be "cookbook", "traditional", "blog", etc.. Having the source type accessible would make people click off the site less (to investigate the legitimacy/identity of the source), allow a sorting system to sort recipes by source type, and somewhat lessen the stress on recipe vetting and comments and reviews.

Secondly I think the home page (search) should include a truncated version of the gallery and the categories below the search bar. There's plenty of space there and it would be more inviting. Alternatively, have the gallery page be the home page.

thirdly, "Recipeasly" in the top left should be clickable, even if it just goes to the same place that a tab on the right would.

1, True, for the more recent ones I've been saying what cookbook I've got them out of, and the author's name. I'll go through the earlier submissions also.
2, I'm going for the original google vibe, just a search bar and not much else. But it is a little bare. Regardless, I should have all recipes on a page in a single list.
3, yeah it should return to home.
