At least in the USA the phrase "plant based" is meaningless, and products labeled with it often still contain eggs/milk powder. Similarly "vegan" isn't even regulated, I always have to check labels on anything premade.

Kinda similar to how "Organic" used to be meaningless until the USDA regulators defined it to mean "pesticide/herbicide/GMO free" and now has a certification process

and to add to that: your system would have to be insanely efficient to make it worthwhile to "recycle" that small amount of plastic. you have to pay people to pick it up, ship it around, perform all sorts of processing on it to get it ready for use again, ship it to a manufacturer, and then it may be reused.

Hi.
In the first world, plastic recycling currently works by bundling plastic into a huge bale and paying a foreign country to ship it overseas (on oil-powered cargo ships) to whoever will take it. Formerly, this was mostly China, who would recycle and reprocess some of it, and leave the lest lying around in big mountains. Now they're no longer interested in taking our whole supply for any reasonable price, so it's beginning to ship to Africa or sometimes India/poor SEA countries, where it is stored in chunks and pieces are allowed to blow away freely usually into the ocean or whatever, and no real attempt at recycling any of it is made other than by random people who may pick some up for some purpose.

What's funny is I am not any sort of environmental activist and don't really care about this and think it's overblown, but I just happen to know how it actually works because I may obtain some bulk junk plastic in the future for some projects I want to work on. Despite supposedly caring, you know nothing about the "recycling" process.

>But don't forget to show up at the anti-capitalism rally!
True, because everyone who disagrees is a damn commie.
>and no real attempt at recycling any of it is made other than by random people who may pick some up for some purpose.
Nope, while there is a very, very sizable amount of plastic that either gets shipped off to third world nations or incinerated in the home country, it's not done at random leisure. Rather, some polymer structures are more recycable/ valuable than others, which is how countries like Germany end up with burn-to-recycle ratio of approximately 55-45.
And this isn't even going deep into how much utility plastic food packaging has done for safely shipping foods and preventing waste.

Your entire post is a giant failure, but it succeeded at telling us that we're not doing our best to be fully conscious of our enviornment. 2/10, meet me after class.

That is because in the US the school systems all function pretty much autonomous from the government. Each school system has some oversight from the state who in turn has oversight from the federal government but it is very loose. The state will impose an easy test to basically see if schools are doing the minimum to educate children and the government may do something like require a national fitness exam. Otherwise schools are hands off, including in the school lunch department. Schools all send representatives to a big convention every year where different companies will lobby and show off their products. Then, the schools will basically hold an auction for their business and see who can provide the cheapest meals. This results in schools literally getting bags of fucking instant fried shit which cost them 1000 dollars a year to purchase in bulk and only pennies to have someone throw it in the microwave and serve it up. The goal is to minimize labor and cost of lunch because if it was up to the school no lunch would be provided at all. Schools have to provide cheap lunches but do not want to spend the money on labor so they buy the literal shittiest products.

And you, along with this article, are retarded. Members of the poaceae family, which corn is among, produce a fruit called a caryopsis which has a portion of the ovary fuse with the seed. When consuming popcorn you are eating the same material as with undried corn kernels. A grain by definition is a fruit. The only argument to be made here is baby corn where you do consume the cob in which case you would be eating both the fruits and vegetative portion of the plant. See me after class.

I don't know about regulations in the US, but in the EU, ingredient lists are sorted by how much of the ingredient is present in the product, so since corn starch is listed after the sea salt, there would be less starch in there than there is salt. going by the final sodium content, that would be less than a gram of starch, I think?
then again, the xanthan gum comes even later in the list, and it seems like a crucial ingredient for the texture of that peanut themed paste, so I guess US ingredient lists aren't sorted by weight.

Basic math.
Recycling plastic is very energy intensive.
Specific thermal capacity of polypropylene is roughly comparable to water.
To raise the temperature of 1 mol of water, pictured above, 1 degree kelvin, or celsius, it takes 75.3 Joules.
Water 75.3 J/°K/mol
Polypropylene 70 -80 J/°K/mol
Think how long it takes to boil a pot of water, the amount of energy it takes. From room temperature, assume 22°C, to 100°C is 78°C.
Thats 78°C x 75.3J = 5873.4J or 5.873 kJ.
And that's for the tiny little bit of water in the flask in pic related. 18.02ml.
Plastic, specifically polypropylene melts at a higher temperature than water boils. 130°C
Difference from room temp.108°C, -> 8.132 kJ to melt one of the lowest melting temp thermo plastics (Nylon melts at 220°C). Again, that's only for one mol of the stuff, like maybe the size of two or three bottle caps, smashed flat into one.
And this assumes 100% efficiency in heating.
Another thing to consider is the working temperature of these materials. The injection molds use a temperature much higher than it's lowest melting point. Also the mechanical energy it takes to make it flow into a mold. Meaning my napkin math is very, very heavily low balled.

Recycling plastic is good to keep it out of the oceans and out of landfills, but it takes large amounts of power. That power is made overwhelmingly in polluting sources, like coal powerplants. You are saving one pollutant in exchange for a larger portion of another.

>Why take the words of another when you can educate yourself.
Because it's impossible for anyone to investigate every single source to every issue they encounter.
I am, for example, not going to study automobile engineering to find out if my car won't explode in my face the next time I start it up, nor will I let retards who claim that the Earth is a flat plane run rampant without me throwing a couple of laughs at them, without having a master's degree in orbital mechanics myself.

I don't trust "scientist" by default.
I'll trust a name, I'll trust an institution, I'll even just tassidly follow the consensus of my community.
But that trust stops being granted when an individual becomes an anonymous hypothetical.

>You might have aspergers or some form of autism because my main contention with this anon was not that recycling was useful but how first world nations handle recycling plastics.
I'm not saying you must educate yourself in every imaginable topic, but that you should not boast or lord about something that you are categorically uninformed about.
You took an opportunity to morally jab at someone, "At least my civilization knows how to recycle, you lowly savage" when the facts of the matter suggest that recycling plastic probably isn't even a net benefit for the environment or society as a whole.
That is what I am saying. You are arrogant in your illinformed notions. You seek a high horse, even when you don't know that you're right to sit atop it.
>nor will I let retards who claim that the Earth is a flat plane run rampant without me throwing a couple of laughs at them, without having a master's degree in orbital mechanics myself.
My point proven. If you cannot refute information someone has presented, and have no intent of incorporating it for yourself, ignore it.
Instead, you take an ignorant position, proudly, and make moral stabs at anyone who deviates from group think.

And the worst part, if you know anything about science/math, he is vastly UNDER estimating the amount of pollution recycling causes. The real cost of recycling is much heavier, and realistically due to the way it works on this shitty Earth the net “Earth-saving” between plastic production and recycling is basically zero.
You can try to say this man is wrong, say he needs real sources, you can say this that and the other - but he’s just doing simple math any of us can do at home and he’s absolutely not wrong for that. What about the animal species that go extinct because of pesticides?

As someone who works in waste management, recycling is a fucking scam. No one does it correctly, maybe 0.5% of what can be recycled will be. Any time there is contamination or possible non recyclable material in loads, the whole batch will get rejected and thrown away because it takes too much time to sort it again after the fact.

potatoes use a lots of pesticide. you kill literal tons of small animals in the fields to get those chips. Ps: organic doesn't mean "no pesticide" it means "only the pesticide we approved first" which includes tons of heavy industry shit like copper sulfate. It's not "cleaner" at all.
