I have been to Tokyo over a hundred times, and both Osaka and Kyoto about a dozen times. I like all three cities. Having lived near and spent more time in Tokyo, I am biased and really love it. However, Osaka is more fun for a kind of alternative, grungy, degenerate kind of experience. And conversely, Kyoto is a wonderful place for some quite, sophisticated, fine dining kind of stuff. People who say Kyoto is shit have never been anywhere in Kyoto but Kin/Ginkakuji, Kiyomizu and the Higashiyama area. I knew many expats who moved into the residential areas of Kyoto for a slower place lifestyle.

I’ve only been to Japan twice; I have a friend who’s a Jap who would translate for us so we had a good ol time, but wandering around Kabukicho(where he lived, so we stayed near by both times), Shibuya, and Ginza and the clubs and shit got old pretty fast. Kyoto and the surrounding area were more novel and enchanting by comparison, and the little restaurants and bars we’d go to were quite a bit nicer.
8/10 would totally only spend a couple of days in Tokyo if I went again

Ginza sucks. Don't ever go there unless you are looking for fine dining. Most of the best susi restaurants are in Ginza but expect to pay hundreds of dollars and be denied unless you can speak Japanese.
Kabukicho is a tourist trap. Back when I lived in Japan there were at least some good sex shops that weren't ripoffs but they have since been closed and replaced with scams,
Shibuya itself is cool to see but the main area sucks. You want to go around the Dogenzaka red light district and into the area with all the music venues. The Japanese underground/indie scene is what you want as opposed to generic "clubbing".

We went to some R&B club in Shibuya that had a bunch of American Blacks there before hitting some generic western superclub; I was pretty wasted by then so I don’t remember much but it wasn’t anything you hadn’t seen before. Ginza and Harajuku was mostly me shopping for other people, and we mainly wandered through Kabukicho to gawk and work up an appetite for dinner. I wasn’t interested in soaplands.
Osaka/Shinsekai was pretty neat with the run-down, seedy atmosphere and the food there was decent too. I’ve started cooking a more Japanese dishes after my trips.

What did you fucking expect? If you are going to go clubbing at least try to find a place playing J-core/speedcore or something actually Japanese.
Also harajuku, at least the main street tourists like to go to, is THE ABSOLUTE worst fucking part of Tokyo. Goddamn I hate Takeshita-dori. If you ever go again avoid that shitshow and hang out in Urahara, Omote Sando and Cat Street.

Bit off-topic, so sorry for saging. Where do fellow jp-anons meet new people? I moved here for my thesis in December and I met several exchange students, but since most japanese people here speak close to no English, it's nearly impossible to meet locals. And I'd hate living in my own secluded community for the next three years. I want to integrate into society.

Is there any other option than passively sitting in a café or izakaya and hoping a local boomer (or a qt3.14) will strike up a conversation?

you fell for the "everyone in japan speaks english" meme, huh?
I'm not sure how that rumor started, your average japanese knows as much english as your average (white) american knows spanish
I don't know why you would move somewhere and anticipate spending years there without learning the language first honestly

I’m an Osaka-expatanon;
I’m not sure what to tell you.. learning the language to at least a basic conversational extent is kinda necessary.
Actual (non gaijin-hunter) locals won’t really open up to you unless you make an effort. Even broken Japanese is appreciated, they’ll try their best with broken English if they know any.
You especially won’t have someone strike up a conversation in an izakaya or such.
Speaking almost no Japanese makes you the “scary dishonest foreigner they’ve been warned about”. Speaking shit Japanese and snowing an effort makes you the “lovably pitiful foreigner who’s at least trying his best”. You’d be amazed at the difference that perception makes.

Yes and no. I didn't expect a lot because I know that the country has always been a bit isolated. I'm from Europe and the average person can at least speak broken English, so I thought that at I'd get by with basic English. Silly of me, I realize that now.

Being able to stay in your field of research, mostly. The field is still fairly young, so there are only few researchers around. The alternatives would've been the USA and Israel, both I'm not particularly fond of (the countries, not the people, mind you).

I noticed that recently when I had an appointment with a physician. They're really opening up once they see you make an effort. So then, I'll have to keep hitting the books for some more time until I can actually hold a conversation and then talk with people? Kind of a bummer, but I can live with that. Thanks!
