Whiskey is a terrible liquor for alcoholics.
>expensive
>strong flavor isn't good for chugging
>dark color so it can't be concealed in a water bottle
>doesn't mix well with muchIts expensive Vodka is the superior liquor for the alcoholic. I can stay drunk all week on 8 bottles of smirnoff and it cost less than 100$. Vodka mixes well with everything and I can fill a water bottle with 12oz of vodka and 24oz of clear Gatorade to get through my day at work.

iBack... the nose has opened up 3 fold. initial nosing peaks with a barrell sourness that fades after the first few approachs. the vanilla has come to life in the mid palate and mixes with the spices and banana note makes me think banana pudding, caramel and brown sugar empanadas, and Jamaican rum soaked soaked banana bread. the wine is emerging with mostly fruity notes, the Pedro doesnt show unless you add a drop or 4 of water and then you get cocoa powder or swiss miss. no nuts this time though. definitely different from Glendronach 12 not really better or worse maybe just slightly sweet overall, but I'm not entirely sure theres a significant difference with the high abv so far.

I think it strictly worsens texture (for whisky).
The primary reason for chill filtration is to prevent cloudiness.
It also affects flavour. Sometimes positively despite what greenwashers would have you believe.

I can't find Hamilton for the life of me. For my tiki purposes, I rock Smith & Cross, Wray & Nephew Overproof, and Lemon Hart 151 as my high-proof rums.

Another of my rums is the Flor de Cana 12, which I think is pretty much the polar opposite of Smith and Cross but is still very delicious to drink. Reminds me more of a specialty rye with dark cocoa and tobacco and dried red fruits. Not nearly as syrupy as Smith and Cross. Give it a shot if you'd like. Total Wine tells me it was $32 when I bought it.

Tax. The UK has a fairly simplified Value Added Tax system (in the sense that other countries have more different taxes), and therefore a fairly high percentage based tax rate (20%) that Americans are avoiding.

In Australia the VAT equivalent, GST, is only 10%. But there's an additional $21 per 700ml 40%abv excise tax that I believe is also not paid on exports.

But everything doesn't make sense. I have not heard of Australian whisky being cheaper outside of Australia (same for many other goods), nor is it the case that UK whisky competes disfavorably when it comes to older whisky (which you'd expect because they have a higher percentage based tax).
It's probably a case of local scarcity, since it is currently the case that I can get Blanton's cheaper than in the US and have no problem finding it, but will have trouble getting ahold of some non Diego 18 year old scotch year round.

I find that a sip of a long open bottle while drunk is not that representative of the whisky as a whole, it is not cost effective compared to buying bottles, and even the largest collections fall short of the variety you can buy yourself.
The bar with the (claimed) biggest collection in Australia for instance only carries 2 Glenfiddichs, the 12 year old at $9 / 30ml and a 1990's 15 year old cask strength at $38 / 30ml.
So even if you tried both of those and enjoyed them you'd have to go elsewhere to try the rest of the series. Ignoring that you shouldn't bother with the latter because the 15 year old cask strength has not been discontinued.

Depends on your taste. For me personally I started with bourbon and then moved over to scotch later on

>> No.15731100

Bourbon: Wild Turkey 101

Scotch: Glenmorangie 10, Ardbeg 10 after that if you're curious about peat.

Bourbon: Wild Turkey 101
Scotch: Johnnie Walker Green Label or, if feeling particularly adventurous, Laphroaig 10
Irish: Redbreast 12 (now is a good time to find this on sale since St. Patty's day is coming up; they have it (and Laphroaig) cheap at Costco if Costco in your location sells booze)
These are good, reasonably-priced starters that aren't your typical, boring, flavorless trash like Maker's Mark or Glenlivet/Glenfiddich.
All of the typically recommended beginner's whiskies are boring and flavorless. There's no reason to start out with them.

I'd actually recommend this over Laphroaig if it's similarly priced, but I recommended Laphroaig instead because it's typically $10-15 cheaper, and it's $37 at Costco if that's available to him, and you're certainly not gonna find Ardbeg for $37 anywhere.

I've never seen one that was good, and I've seen a lot.
If you want to explore Scotch, try a peat bomb (Laphroaig 10, Ardbeg 10 or Ardbeg Corryvreckan), a sherry bomb (Aberlour A'bunadh or Glenfarclas 105) and something unpeated and matured solely in bourbon casks (Hazelburn 10 is lovely).
There. You've now covered most of the flavors you'll find in Scotch in only three bottles.
Then, if you like both peat and sherry, maybe try something peated and sherried, like Lagavulin 16 or Ardbeg Uigeadail.
You just need to try different styles of Scotch until you learn what styles/flavors you do and don't like. Once you have a firm grasp of what styles you like and don't like, you'll be able to be fairly successful at predicting what whiskies you will and won't like from online reviews alone.
It's been a long time since I've bought a bottle of Scotch I didn't like because I simply know what I like and don't like by now so it's easy to pick new Scotches based on reviews.

Whiskies with this high of ABV are best appreciated with super tiny sips. A lot of people who can't handle cask strength whiskies neat are taking too big of sips. The burn isn't nearly as bad when you take a tiny sip, but the flavor intensity remains.
