I haven't seen all that many episodes, but the American version is basically more akin to a stylized reality show focusing on some forced interpersonal drama, while the British one goes more for natural down to earth documentary style with focus on the business aspect, with much less fluff. I think that both approaches can have its merits, but to me the american one is just way too obnoxious and much more juvenile. The use of over the top music and trying to appear as dramatic and extreme as possible comes across as too forceful and not believeable.
