Depends on the state and who is running the store, but generally speaking a driver gets minimum wage while in store, then sub-minimum wage while delivering (what a country, you get paid less when doing your actual job than you do while waiting in the store to do your job) and then actual tips
If you're in one of the shit tier states, or you are owned by a franchise who just doesn't care about employment law, you might just end up on a sub-minimum wage like $5 an hour for the whole time.
The delivery charge is yet another 'murican invention to transfer profits from staff to owners (people who pay a delivery charge are less likely to tip a driver, so the $2 they might have tipped the driver goes straight to the owner instead and the driver gets nothing), hence the flyer attached to the box from the driver to beg for an actual tip.
And of course, the driver has to pay all their car costs, so they end up making even less money once they pay insurance, fuel and car upkeep.
It's also one of the most likely jobs in the nation to get murdered on the job. If you bring a gun and get found out they fire you.
All for sub-minimum wage.
There's a reason why almost no-one lasts more than 2 years in the job.

So I take your order, and the bonus, I take my sweet ass time getting to you. I will put your food in the warmer bag but it’s still gonna be cold, not because of me but because it sat on the restaurant counter for thirty minutes while drivers passed on your offer.

I drive for GH. If you tip poorly, and it’s a long drive, drivers will reject your order and your order will be delayed. I’ve gotten offers and the pickup time was half an hour before I was offered the order because the customer didn’t tip. The order sits in limbo.

If I get a good offer with a good tip I accept it immediately and make sure I do a good job.

Sometimes I will buy myself food or a drink when it’s slow between deliveries. Or I’ll get gas. If I’m waiting in line for one of those and it’s a good tip I leave the line to get the order ASAP.

If not then I take my time. I do hurry and try to go a good job even on low earning orders but a better tip makes me work better desu

Not until after we’ve delivered it. We get shown a map of pickup location and delivery location and our location, as well as a total dollar amount. The dollar amount is based on time, distance to the restaurant and then to the customer, and then the customer’s tip. If an order has been rejected by other nearby drivers, then there will be a bonus.

We used to be able to see the tip amount after accepting the order, but now we don’t see it until we pick up the order. But we still have a good idea. The most you’ll get from mileage and time is like $7, and that’s for like a 30 minute drive. So if an offer is for $20 or so we know it’s a good tip.

Yo GHdudes, serious question.

What’s happens when something simply isn’t delivered?
A couple of times, my order never arrived. Like the tracker showed the driver meandering around my general area, and then it was suddenly marked as delivered.

GH gave me instant refunds both times when I contacted them, so who eats the cost? GH? The restaurant? Does the driver get to keep what they were paid for the delivery?

>> No.15675133

There are three options;
1. Delivered to incorrect address
2. Lied about delivering because of laziness or food theft.
3. Someone walking or driving by stole it.

I have failed a single delivery in my four months of driving. I delivered to a motel next to another motel and dropped the food in front of the wrong motel’s room of the same number. I was too far away when I got the diner’s call that he hadn’t got it. He got a refund and the order was canceled but I got to keep the money GH paid me for it. So for me, I think the most likely thing is he delivered to the wrong address - either your mistake in the app, the GPS’s mistake on your address, or his mistake in picking the house.

He may have stolen it because he was hungry and thought he could get away with it. Idk. If a driver gets too many complaints like this their account will be deactivated.

It is also theoretically possible that someone else stole it but I find that highly improbable.

I am an honest driver who tries to do a good job, so my perspective is colored by that.

If the driver spends time driving around your area, then marks it as delivered, I suspect one of your neighbors had the meal dropped at their door, and your driver picked the wrong house. It’s also possible the driver was in a hurry to pick up another order (we can get offers for a second order if we’re within 5min of arriving at our current order), and since he couldn’t find your house he lied and marked it delivered so he could move on.

Who eats the cost?

On my single failed delivery, I kept my delivery fee and my tip. So GrubHub ate that cost. Who eats the cost of the food? GrubHub does. The restaurant’s contract is to hand off to the driver. If they do that, they get paid. GrubHub gets like 30% the list price of the food as commission so they’re only paying 70% when they eat the cost of a failed delivery.

Yeah, I’m starting to wonder what the incentive is for tipping with a “general” food delivery service.
Like if you’re a regular customer at a dine-in restaurant, and leave good tips, it only takes a couple visits for the staff to know you’re a “good tipper”, and you get amazing service, occasional free shit, stronger drink-pours, etc.
and if you do the same ordering from a restaurant that does it’s own deliveries, you start getting quick ass deliveries.
But it seems with GH it’s possible to always have different drivers, so “tipping history” is meaningless.

>> No.15675479

>if the delivery charge isn't paid to your driver then what is it for
Price-adjustment and marketing.
Ex: you and bob own pizza joints across the street from each other. You both have the same base $5 cost to make a pizza, your quality is identical, and you both want to make $10 on a pizza.
You sell your pizza for $15 with free delivery.
Bob sells his for $11, with a $4 delivery fee.
Bob now has some big advantages over you; first, he can advertise his pizza as being cheaper than yours. people will perceive ordering pizza from him as a better deal, as it’s well known in advertising that most people don’t consider fees/tax as part of the product cost. So he’ll get a ton more delivery orders than you.
Secondly, he’s gonna take all of your carryout customers, because they aren’t gonna pay you $15 when they can get his at a “deal” for $11. Sure he’s making less profit on those customers, but he’s still profiting while getting more volume and hurting the competition.

That’s a gross over simplification but it’s the basic idea.
tl;dr - delivery fees are mostly for making joe public feel like he’s getting a better deal on product being delivered, and also incentivizes carryouts.

Anyone who's lived in both a country that does tip and doesn't tip could tell you this, but countries without a tipping culture always have better service than those that do. Something about tipping culture builds a mentality in waiters/waitresses that they are worth more than they actually are (all they do is carry plates from the kitchen to the table, imagine tipping for something that a child could do), and they start acting like they're better than their customers as a result. American tipping culture really has to go.

>implying I can't just say you complained at the door about your tip and that's why I think you did it
>implying your boss won't throw you under the bus to save face after
>implying you're not LARPing and actually had the balls to fuck with someone's food

Why learn a trade when most people are just working delivery jobs to help pay for college?

>Waaaaah my job for literal teenagers doesn't pay me enough!
Even if driving is literally your only skill, you can easily make a good living doing literally anything else. I might tip a young kid doing his first ever job, but if you're a grown man, and you still deliver pizzas, I'm not going to support your poor life choices.

I deliver through doordash and I definitely see your no tipping ass before I decide to pick it up or not. You're only hurting yourself and dumbass drivers doing that, anyone with half a brain will see an order without a tip and just ignore it.
