The problem with getting signs of affection from other people is that you don't know if they actually like you or if they're just making fun of you. Any real autist has been in the situation where a girl asks them out as a joke, then when you say "yes" everyone laughs. Sometimes people pretend to be your friend so they can steal from you, or to trick you into buying them things, or to take advantage of you in other ways. Sometimes people invite you to places where they won't actually be, just because it will be funny when you believe them and show up. Not being able to read people's emotions and intentions from their tones and faces would be bad enough, but the fact that you can't is so funny to people that they all try to trick and confuse you whenever they can because they want to see you get it wrong more. Even people who are "nice" to you are just doing it because they feel bad for you, because they know you're an autist who gets bullied all the time. They don't actually like you either, and they would never invite you to the REAL social events or date you.

For an autist, the good thing about talking to total strangers is that they don't know you're an autist. That means that, for a refreshing few seconds when the guy says "may I take your order," you know for a fact that you're getting the exact same interaction that a normal non-autistic person would get. Cashiers are people who treat you like they treat everyone else. When you've met them enough times that they remember your order, that illusion suddenly goes right out the window. This is a person that knows you after all, and they might hate you or laugh at you behind your back like most others who know you do. He probably thinks your normal order is funny, that's why he remembers it. She probably smiles when she hands you your drink because she is laughing at you. The heart drawn on the cup is most likely a joke because you're unlovable, etc
