Question for my British co/ck/s (or anyone else really): Why do I have to let my earl grey teabag steep for 4 minutes when the water turns dark almost immediately? I know I'm retarded so there will be no bullying in this thread only helpful comments thank you

Different compounds are extracted from tea at different rates. Most of the colour is extracted very quickly, but that's not an indication of the deeper flavours.

Please stop buying bagged tea.

I steep mine for 30 sec because I like my earl grey on the light side. I can see how people who add cream and sugar want a heavy brew, but that is not for me.

Funny story I normally drink loose leaf but my mother gave me a shitload of teabags that had been sitting in her cupboard so I'm pounding through them so as not to waste them. I'm talking like 300 bags

I'd be pretty wary of steeping a teabag that long, yeah.

>Why do I have to let my earl grey teabag steep for 4 minutes when the water turns dark almost immediately?
Companies selling tea bags almost always do so in a direct effort to maximize profit over flavor/'quality'. They will use what is effectively flavorless floor dust, or cheap leaf ground into particulates or shreds because it will much more readily infuse into a liquid due to having significantly more available surface area. The reason it becomes dark and bitter so quickly is because of this rapid infusion, bringing in a lot of caffeine and bitter notes such as those from tannins. This leads to a low quality, bland, non-aromatic cup of tea. As a result of buying this bad tea, many people resort to using milk, sugar/sugar substitutes, and so on in order to mask the flavor of their unpleasant and low-quality infusion. If you think about it, these people could have just saved time and money by buying good loose tea, but most will not because of perceived convenience. If you or anyone else wants to learn more, there is an active /tea/ general on this board: >>15591516

Why don't you just run an experiment to find out? Get five cups and steep each for a different amount of time. That'll explain it better than anything you're going to get from reading about it

Fun fact I learned at work.

If you drink tea steeped for too long on an empty stomach you will throw up. This is great for getting out of work early

The longer you let it steep the more stuff is going to be extracted, obviously, but that's not what the time suggestion is optimizing for. It's just telling you how long to leave it in for taste.

what if what I really like is the scent of bergamot and that gets extracted long before other stuff that might taste bitter and end up preferring the 30 second steep best? I'D BE IN QUITE A PICKLE THEN

1 minute seep: Tasted like dirty water
2 minute seep: Slightly more aromatic, slightly bitter dirty water.
3 minute seep: Better. More flavour.
4 minute seep: Same as the last but with more bitterness.

I liked 3 minutes the most. This is with no sugar or milk.
