Thread dedicated to the discussion of spirits, the best type of alcohol. Whisky, rum, brandy, tequila, gin, vodka, whatever you're into.

>> No.15533488

They call them spirits because back then, whenever a bottle of spirits was opened, the alcohol vapor was visible, and people thought it was spirits.

Also, rum > gin > vodka > whiskey > everything else

my parents are from croatia and i wish there was high proof rakija reeking of fermented fruit made in these small stills available commercially. what i found in stores was mostly 40% and made on large industrial stills. it's fine for what it is, a clean alcohol product with little congeners but definitely not meant to be a complex sipper. seems like you need to know a guy who knows a guy in the countryside but my parents are cityfags.

This is really good for $35 ish bucks. It is authentic pot still distilled rum, so it has some of that funky high ester palate of bananas and other tropical fruits going on.

An alternative: the real mccoy is a good rum brand that is relatively cheap. It's pretty middle of the road with the funky character. If you want to make cocktails it's probably a better bet than something like Appleton.

Ron Zacapa 23 is pretty good for $40 ish but contains a lot of added sugar. It's pretty decadent and almost like spiced rum only it really is rum and has some pretty old spirit in there.

Because it's a mixing tier spirit that you wouldn't put in your mouth and there are some small proportion of gin drinkers trying to be somewhat fair in A-B comparisons that are judging the content of the bottle and not the freshness of fruit or synergy with a particular tonic.
If something like Bombay is on your radar you should probably stop trying gin and focus on trying expensive tonics combined with bottom shelf swill. Until boredom convinces you to start looking for something distinct and you start seeing additives as at least a partial mask.

>>15535539
I think that may not be a fair comparison. Are you comparing whisky/rum + coke; mixer vs mixer? There are bourbons and spiced rums in some very low price brackets that will do just as well as gin and tonics. And if you are drinking neat then scotch is by far the best value if you're looking for age or cask finishes. Not that gin can stand much barrel or wine influence.

You're correct mate.

Ive bought several expensive gins. Given that its always mixed, the few additional subtleties that come with buying top end gin are lost. Mid tier gin is just as good at half the price.

The only reasonable argument for top end gin seems to be if you use it for martinis, but its still questionable if its worth while.

Menthol is a really abnormal flavor for armagnac in general. What producer, if you don't mind my asking?

>>15537095
I love armagnac, it's probably my favorite spirit. Castarede is pretty mid-tier quality wise imo. Their house style is pretty assertively spice-forward, so if that's your jam I'd say go for it.

My favourite producers are probably chateau laubade, delord, and darroze, particularly their vintage single-vineyard bottlings. As a broad generalization producers tend to use their best stuff for vintage bottles.

There seems to be an extreme lack of awareness of the price disparities between states for the price of spirits. Do you think there is any money in buying in states in which certain brands are priced low and selling in states that are high or are the regulations expensive to get around? Depends on what you're looking for.
Bacardi is a great way to cut your teeth with rum, and once you get into it more their top shelf rums are actually very nice.
Myers tastes like molasses, if that's your thing. But most people buy it to make dark and stormies.
Definitely try Captain Morgan, as it will be a good indicator of what you do and don't like in a rum.

These are your more common brands and depending on how you feel about them you can try the more expensive stuff.

For rum something from Barbados like Mount Gay XO or Doorly's 12. Don't know much about whisky but probably something like glenfiddich.

if you haven't had any whiskey before you could start with any swill like j&b, if you want to try scotch to get a feel of the difference between types of whiskeys get a somewhat decent one, preferably a single malt one

>>15565798
Blended whisky has a pretty bad reputation, even more so for reasonably priced whisky. Fortunately, they're often very dependable considering their price. You might just want it on the rocks instead of in a glencairn sometimes. That being said, >>15566537 makes a good point. If you've already tried a lot of liquor and some whisky then you should have an idea of what you're looking for in a scotch. A heavily peated Islay will be very different from a Speyside sherry bomb. If you're just getting into it, I'd check out different, cheaper blends that go for different taste profiles often found in scotch until you know what you like. As >>15565785 wrote, at the end of the day, even if it is terrible, you'll gain a reference point and appreciation for more expensive stuff down the line. Honestly, I can't tell much difference after the third unit or so, and I don't always want to cradle a glencairn for an hour. Therefore, I always keep a bottle of the swill around for those situations.
