He's not the best or most tastiest fish, but he's always there when you need him

Based tilapia eater. Brace yourself for the influx of Karens screeching about health.

Agreed, tilapia isn't the tastiest, nor the healthiest, but it's serviceable and difficult to fuck up. If salmon is a Porsche, tilapia is a Jeep.

Tilapia? More like tilsloppa. Only people who don’t care about any level of quality use this fish

Almost all tilapia (perhaps all?) is farmed, so I guess the complaint would be against the inferior nutrition profile vs wild caught salmon or something.
Fun tilapia fact: you can feed five thousand people with just a couple so long as they fill up on bread.

“The rumor that tilapia prefer poop stems from an episode of Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel in which the host, Mike Rowe, visited a fish farm that raised hybrid striped bass. Mike unknowingly exposed the cruelty of the farmers, as they starved their tilapia into eating the wastes of the more valuable bass. Some time later, after a public outcry, the farm reported that the tilapia were only being used as "cleaners" and were never intended for human consumption. Still not nice, but whatever.

Other investigations into the tilapia farming practices in Honduras, Vietnam, Indonesia and China, have reported that it is not uncommon for fish farmers to starve tilapia into eating hog manure. Surprisingly, this practice does not have to be disclosed when the tilapia filets are imported for sale in US grocery stores. This is actually true of all imported fish. To be safe, you should only eat fish raised in the United States.“

The more I learn of the rest of the world’s food practices, it makes me sicker and sicker. Why are they so filthy with their food?

Tilapia are grown in unsanitary conditions and fed a constant chemical diet of antibiotics and antifungals, none of which are approved for human consumption.

I’m sure if you fed them real food and kept them in a nice clear pond they’d be OK. But this is a garbage fish.

Also expensive as fuck nowadays

A truer comparison would be a 1998 ford f-150. You can run a telephone pole through one of those guys and they would still run just fine.

Not disputing the facts, but I owned two Jeep’s with pretty much zero issues for over 15 years. Just traded in the second one for 5 grand less than I bought it for 7 years earlier. Got two dealerships in a bidding war for it.

I got a bad filet the other day. It looked normal, but tasted like aquarium filter. The rest of the two pound bag (of frozen filets) was fine. Go figure.

Maybe the "people" who say tilapia tastes like mud are just extremely unlucky and have only tried it once. So they're only 97% wrong.

>Mmmm so fresh and healthy

Now before you call me a Karen let me elucidate something for you. Tilapia and swai are both mostly sold by Asia and they compete directly with American catfish and white fish markets so domestically tilapia and swai are demonized. ie swai is a catfish but US catfish sellers pushed for a law against calling them catfish because consumers like them more.

Both fish are typically raised in chicken shit farms where the birds sit over the water and poop into it. Neither are guaranteed to be clean and healthy, but you can find quality tilapia and swai.
