i hear that a lot but i didn't find it to be true. rums are actually more expensive once you go after the unmanipulated stuff or stuff that gets written about on blogs. you can get decent entry malts for 40 euros (laphi, talisker etc. for even less). rumfags like to bring up muh tropical aging as an excuse but a jamaican's year is not worth more money than a scotsman's year in my opinion. besides, climate zone is not the only factor in the maturation process.

Why would you seek to consume something that doesn't have flavor?
Whisky is tasty. It tastes good, it has a positive flavor and that's why people drink it. Good whisky is for sipping neat or on a tiny bit of ice, not in cocktails - but whisky cocktails are also good, I just wouldn't waste an expensive dram making cocktails. Whisky-centric cocktails like the Old Fashioned are intended to highlight and accentuate the natural flavors of the whisky rather than mask them or compete with them. I wouldn't have a whisky coke unless the only spirit available is something like JD that needs to have its heinousness covered up.

If you're mixing vodka with juice or soda and that's what you think a cocktail is, you are still drinking like a 20 year old college girl. And if you like that, there's nothing wrong with doing what you like, but it's an overly simplistic and somewhat hamfisted way to drink. Why not drink something you enjoy on a more intrinsic level? Why not enjoy the craftsmanship of good spirits?
