self-sufficiency is a national ideal. that said, the "kicked out at 18" is a story I've only heard from much older men, who were 18 in a very different era. These days it's a very different timeline, and seems fully acceptable to have some kind of support through the higher-educational-years, making for a proper runway into adult life. Ultimately I know that if anything were to truly happen to me, there is still a family home I could go back to, but I haven't lived at home since 22, for three months between apartments after a slumlord had me renovicted. By that point I had completed a 2-year degree at the community college while working part-time and full-time summers, setting up a good base of savings that has, thus far been able to pave over any major disruption I've faced thus far in my young life, praise be.
I also know some people who have never moved away, now approaching 30 and looking into homeownership with their savings, seems sensible but these people tend to be developmentally-stunted in other ways, some more subtle than others. And I also know people who are hopeless deadbeat dependents who can't hold down a job or wipe their own asses, so they remain in tempestuous, contentious living situations with family long past any acceptable "age of maturity".

Then again, my own mother lived at home until 31, settling into a habit of taking my grandma on yearly vacations in return. When my parents married, my father had much better income but not much savings (retirement accounts aside) while she had saved up a very nice down-payment.

Truth is a pathless land. But it is good to stand on your own two feet.

Appreciate that your dad enjoys your cooking. Look at it as something nice you did for him. If you didn't specifically ask him not to eat your food, he probably just figured it was for everyone. By your own admission, it's technically his fridge and his home. He is a boomer after all. My parents live in our basement apartment. They are in their 70's and I regularly cook for them and encourage them to eat or use whatever they want from me. My wife cleans their apartment twice a week. Helping your family is admirable and noble. Too many millennials and zoomers plan to throw their parents in nursing homes even when they leeched off them until they were 30. It's culturally unhealthy. Family is everything and your parents won't be around forever. Grow up and make some more pasta.
