The secret to a good PBnJ is for one slice to be heavy with PB, but the other only lightly smeared with jelly. A thin smear of jelly is nice to contrast and cut through the very thick fatty flavor and texture of the PB and helps from make your mouth all pasty and dry, but too much jelly will make it just seem like eating a pie sandwich

Has anyone been able to make a sandwich as good as the 7/11 ones in Japan? I’ve gotten close, but I swear they whip the Mayo and egg yolks. It’s so fluffy yet has the perfect bite it. Also the bread is hard to get in America, I’ve found most white bread to be not as dense and fluffy as their bread.

By grandmother always buttered the bread when making sandwiches. I just figured it was a boomerism of sorts. In theory, it keeps the bread from getting soggy from the condiments while at the same time making the bread less dry, which is also what people use tend to use mayonnaise for. I guess if you either grew up with cheap bread or just picked it up as a habit from your parents, it makes sense.

I never really got into the habit of it. If I'm making a bunch of sandwiches that aren't going to be eaten right away, I might do it. Butter and peanutbutter was a weird combo, but I didn't mind. Right now you've got me wondering about mayonnaise and peanutbutter, but I'm not quite drunk enough to try that... yet.

>Why put butter on bread but not sandwiches?
Because mayo is better for sandwiches, it's tastier and more savory, while butter is a bit bland and becomes completely overpowered by the contents of the sandwich rather than adding to it.
It's also more common for Americans to keep their butter cold in the fridge, so it's easy to apply to warm bread or hot toast, but not so easy to apply to soft room temp bread.
