Chad truth opinion coming through:
You add beans to chili because they're somewhat neutral and give you a protein and starch padding, enabling you to use less meat overall without compromising on flavor. This enables you to use more expensive but less plentiful meat for an even richer flavor and better consistency.

You CANNOT argue logic with these idiots.

They're Cali and AZ transplants who moved into Texan cities and tried to put on a show of what it meant to "BE A REAL TEXAN" in their blue brains. They will screech and holler about people putting beans in their chili, but you know what?

I don't give a damn. I make my chili the way I like I. My mom makes her chili the way she likes it. You can joke about things all you want, but the second you start genuinely moaning and bitching about the way someone makes their chili in their house, you may as well get the fuck out of Texas.
If you invite me over for some chili, and you just give me a bowl of beans: I'll laugh at you. Then I'll say thanks, and eat it all just the same.

chili thankfully is a rather simple dish, extremely easy to make and much of the flavour is strong due the namesake spices, so you don't have to go fancy with it or worry too much about fine balance or light flavours. it is very much a meal you can throw together as a novice and end up with something tasty.

if you want to make it special you can use whole chilis, but powders work fine. I use ancho, cayenne/habanero, chipotle, paprika, cumin, garlic, onion, salt, pepper, and dark chocolate/cocoa powder. I don't even bother measuring, I just eyeball it in depending on what flavours I want strong. I don't really like adding tomatoes but I'll add beans for filler if I'm in the mood for it.

you might want to thicken it with flour, if for whatever reason the chili comes out too thin; the best way is a roux but roux can be hard, so an easier method is to slowly mix flour with either some water or some of the chili liquid in a bowl, and mix it until it becomes a smooth paste/slurry. this is important because improperly adding it to the chili will clump it and ruin the entire thing. you can also thicken it with a bean paste (I've done this before with just straight up refried beans), and I've heard of people thickening it with cornbread.

Whether or not you put beans in chili is pretty much up to the cook. If you don't like the way the cook made the chili, then make your own.

That said, there are some things that are much better without beans in the chili. For example, when using it for a Frito Pie or for a Chili Dog. Yeah, you could use chili with beans for both, but it isn't an improvement.

For just a bowl of chili, if you want beans, add them. If you don't want beans, don't add them.

By the way, in OP's picture, is that potatoes in the chili? Now that is strange.
