Here's a fun fact about liquor in Norway:

In Norway, alcoholic beverages that contain more than 22% alcohol, like whisky, vodka etc, is called "brennevin" which directly translate to "burning wine". Another not so fun fact is that you can only buy it in government shops that is called "vinmonopolet" which translates to "The Wine Monopoly". Everything stronger than 4.7% is only allowed to be sold in the wine monopoly, even beer.

Post fun facts about food and beverages or anything related ples

It literally means to burn, but you are right that in norway "to burn" also mean "to distill" probably because they traditionally used an open flame to generate the heat needed to distill it. It's a pretty interesting point that I didn't think about and I am inclined to believe your explanation is the right one. Mine is of course right to, but I missed the significant part of it

Vinmonopolet gets insane deals on wines. Since it's a public service they can't markup rare or highly sought-after bottles, which means they end up selling bottles that are really expensive on the global market for really cheap prices. Sometimes people sleep outside Vinmonopolet to be the first to buy these bottles, then they sell them for a massive profit outside of Norway. There are also people who travel to Norway just to buy wines from Vinmonopolet.

Canada, Quebec specifically has something similar where you can buy beer and wine and like kids alcohol like smirnoff ice and 4 loko type shit in grocery stores and corner stores - but then anything stronger than those is sold only in government stores.

I don't mind, there's plenty of the stores around with great selections and also we've got the lowest drinking age in the country. Also thank fuck those and the government weed stores remained opened during the lockdowns.

In Texas, only liquor stores can sell liquor. Grocery stores and corner stores can sell wine and beer, but basically nothing heavier than vermouth.
On Sundays, all liquor stores in Texas are closed by law.
So what's a guy to do if he wants to get shitfaced before church? Just pop over to the corner store for a 40 oz, right?
The kicker is you can buy wine and beer on Sundays but only after 12 PM noon, so your pregaming will have to wait until after your pastor bores your eyes out.
BONUS FACT: These same blue laws also apply to car dealerships being closed on Sunday. So if you wanted to buy a gun, a bottle of whiskey, and a used car for a Sunday drive you'll be walking home sober with an ar-15.

Real smirnoff ice is sold only at SAQ because it contains vodka. Smirnoff does have a line of malt beverages. Corner stores and grocery stores can sell beer (no ABV restrictions), small wine selection, and malt liquor. Restaurants have to buy through the SAQ, but at a discount. They can have their own private imported wine collection though.

It gets worse. It's a county basis in the states, so even if state laws aren't strict, you could be near or in a dry county.
Wikipedia expert researcher:
Granted, we have a dozen or so counties larger than 10 or so European nations, but Norway ain't one of them. Population makes it a bit more complicated, though. Our dry counties tend to be on the less populated side, so it's more similar on that end.

Medications, including really hard medications, aren't "sinful"
Some Mormons might say they are, some don't, it's a case by case (or church by church) basis.
But yes, Utah has an opioid problem. Mormons usually abuse opioids because they're legal, and they're "medications" rather than being "drugs"

in NL you can sell stuff up to wine/champagne levels of alcohol in the supermarket and everything else has to be bought from a liquor store
in Romania they sell everything everywhere but the better stuff is legit locked away and you have to get someone working there to get it for you because otherwise they'd get stolen; it makes it feel even more pretentious to get the good stuff desu

It's a remnant from the prohibition time I think. When it ended they wanted to do a soft and limited introduction of alcohol to society again I guess. But that said it has become a excellent and superb store to buy wine and liquor the past 20 years. Before that the stores were very few with limited selection and it was operated like a "bar" where you had to go to the disk and say what you wanted. You couldn't go in and pick for yourselves. And the ques was fucking long man, every fucking weekend. Now it is a top notch store with very knowledgeable employees. Only thing that sucks is that it is still a monopoly and the short opening hours
