Years ago I spent a few months working in Illinois and I used to order from pic related at least once a week. It's not godly, but for a chain it's a damn good thin crust. IL, MI and IN, predictably, has the best pizza on the continent. On a related note, Cincinnati now has some of the best 'za in the region.

Mod is actually fine. If you're a big dumbass like me when I was 19, you order everything because you don't really understand a flavor profile. If you're less of a dumbass like me when I was 24, you order something with a distinct profile you'd like. The last time I went to Mod I think I ordered some kind of balsamic fig chicken and basil pizza. It was based like I couldn't believe.


Favorite pidzor is such a difficult topic because they're all good for different reasons. The best value is the Domino's pan style pizzas, which are like $2 more than little caesar's but pretty fucking delicious considering you only paid like $7.99 and if you order 6 of them you get the 7th free or whatever. But if price weren't an option, there are some local places round here that have some of my favorites. Not worth mentioning, not really chains at all.

I used to work in a pizza place and we would do this a lot around closing time. But one time my friends and I did a taste test where they spent $40 dollars on a 10 inch gourmet spinach and feta pie, and I spent $8 on a cheesed out Domino's colon clogging fuck machine and all of us agreed that even though we could tell the Domino's one was a worse quality pizza, we really did like the way it tasted more.

That's precisely the problem. NY pizza is fine, it's perfectly passable, it's highly available anywhere you go, it's reasonably priced. That's what it has going for it: You can go anywhere in NYC and get decent affordable pizza. But quality is not its strong suit, there are no NY pizzas that will actually leave an impression and make you want to go back to that one place with that excellent pizza. There is no NYC equivalent to Gino's East or Buddy's Pizza. Because it's all just... good, fine. It just exists and won't disappoint. But then the fucking New Yorker's act like their pizza is some fucking amazing godsend or something and it's just not. Hell, I even ask people who LIVE IN NYC which places I should go for the best NYC pizza experience and they all just shrug their shoulders and say, "I dunno, just go to a local place or something," because no single place has ever left a real impression on them but they won't admit to the reality of what that actually says about NYC pizza.
