What is the best cheap coffee? I love getting the good stuff from online or in person at my local places but it ends up being expensive in the long run.

What do you get? Trader Joe's coffee? Some bottom shelf shit you force yourself to drink? Some kind of chain brand like from Wawa or Dunkin or whoever else?

I usually get an espresso from my local hipster roaster or my gf's restaurant, which gets their espresso from the same roaster.
If I'm honest it hurts my pride a bit, I work at a coffeehouse in the same area, but our coffee is the worst in the city. We get coffee from a third-rate roaster, use a Rancilio Epoca from 2004 that has never been taken care of and barely functions, and have an owner and manager who don't like or care about coffee in the slightest.
I used to work at a really nice shop, but covid wiped it out. I miss it, my passion is dying fast working at this third-rate shithole. Doesn't help I'm the only one with proper barista training who works their.

A machine isn't going to make the espresso for you. You're going to have to get something to learn on if you're interested. I'd say get a flair, but the water capacity isn't big enough for a lungo. For a grand I'd go for a silvia or gaggia with all the mods you can throw at it(opv, pid, preinfusion), and a hand grinder.

Final few beans of this ruby roast. That longer shot time completely rounded out the sharp finish I got last time. Much longer, much less astringent on the finish, and the chocolate lingers. Pulling some more cheap brazilian next, yellow bourbon semi washed. Same farm I believe.

Paper filters all have slightly different flow rates. Odds are very good you can find a cheap paper filter with a flow rate close enough to an expensive one that it doesn't matter. Be wary of anything that uses a non-universal shape. In my experience white (bleached) papers can have a negative taste. I generally avoid those.

Similar story here anon, am a fellow ec155 owner. I've done a lot to try and get a better shot out of the thing but I haven't had much luck either. I posted a little earlier about getting a new grinder, the 270, so I'll see if a better grind improves things. Generally what I've found to be more effective is to let it warm up for at least a half hour, or to continuously pull blank shots to get it to come up to proper temp. And yeah, no advice for the milk wand, I get pretty inconsistent results in quality and texture with it. I've seen a common solution for it is to replace it with a silvia wand but that seems more effort than it's worth. Lately I've been feeling the urge to upgrade as well, I'm thinking a gaggia classic, seems pretty good for the price.

>> No.15444244

yeah i see the silvia wand being recommended but it makes no sense to spend 50 dollars (where i live) to buy a new wand for a cheap old machine. i use a good grinder (comandante) and it really doesn't help much. i guess the flow is alright. i found that swirling the milk jug after steaming helps a lot. but results are inconsistent and today i couldn't even draw anything kek.
i might look into a flair eventually actually.

How much coffee is too much to drink in a day?

I read it's fine to drink 3-4 cups a day, but sizes confuse me, as I don't know if they talk about those tiny ass cups I've only seen in hipster coffee shops, or the average mug everyone has at home.

For the record, I have a medium sized coffee in the morning and a large one after my main meal.

Went to a local cafe for the first time today. Was pretty good, definitely better than starbucks. Pretty strong but none of that burnt bitter flavor you normally get. Latte art was pretty to look at as well. Also gives me a perspective on how my lattes should turn out flavor and texture wise.

Dp people really just leave appliances like that plugged in all the time? I have a normal coffee maker and a toaster, and thats all I leave plugged in all day. Better question is, do you use it all day or just in the morning? because if its all day, that I can justify. But I only use my grinder in the morning, so when i make my coffee I unplug it

That does sound a tad unpleasant. Hopefully nothing bad happens so soon after I get it.

Coming from using an encore that takes a half minute or more to grind for one shot and is a pain in the ass to switch from pour over to espresso, I'm ecstatic to have two grinders now. And this thing can grind a double in about five and a half seconds.

Although I did notice the shot that came out wasn't all that great. Grind setting 9E coming out in ~20 seconds yielding 60 g out, 16 g in, and it came out bitter. Though, I'm willing to chalk it up to the beans, whatever method I do it comes out kinda burnt and bitter.

Still, one step further to getting a better shot.

I think all these try hard pour over methods don't do shit. Followed the ultimate method by that british fuck. Coffee was bitter as fuck. Try the 4:6 method, and its bitter as fuck. Kinda sorta. While I do think that these guys who make "recipes" are huge fart-sniffers, the idea of what they are trying to do makes sense. The reality is that everyone has different beans, different grinders, and most importantly different tastes. Anybody who is not an idiotic fart smeller can just intuitively make a good cup of coffee for himself in three tries or less without help.

Sooner or later these rules will codify into a "perfect" "method" and somebody will reinvent an automatic drip machine and be touted as a fucking genius in the fart-sniffing coffee world. Then the cycle will repeat.

Continuing to get dialed in, loving the fact that the grinder doesn't try and die if I grind one notch finer. Shots are getting a little better, pulled one a little fast this morning, fined it up, and then pulled one 17 in about 38 out in 25 seconds. Way more palatable than what I usually pull, got a little sweetness with it, still pretty bitter with lingering bitter aftertaste. Probably have to grind a little finer and cut it short I'm guessing is my next step. Also maybe changing out beans for something lighter, every cup regardless of method comes out with that roasty bitterness. Using Kicking Horse Cliffhanger Espresso right now.

Also, put that shot into a latte and after I finished that I went and poured myself a cup of drip that my mom had made earlier, literally tastes like water lmao.

With the 4:6 method, make sure you're using the correct grind size and temperature for your beans. Grind size should be semi coarse. A good starting point is just enough to cover the numbers on the date of a penny. Secondly, if you're using a medium or medium / dark roast, lower your temp to around 200-202° F. Lighter roasts around 205-208°. Honestly, the 4:6 method gives me very predictable results once you dial in grind and temp.

I think it's about consumer choice. If you like to go innawoods or traveling a lot, it's very useful.
Hand grinders also appeal to those who want really high quality but at a cheaper price point and don't mind the extra work.
As far as I know, we're talking $150-300 hand grinders that compete with their $400+ electric counterparts.
Espresso-wise, you got a hand grinder that beats out a Sette or a Smart Grinder in quality and can do filter coffee as well.

As to the metal burrs thing, I can't speak about premium hand grinders.
That said, I went from a cheap hand grinder with ceramic burrs to metal ones in my Encore. Massive jump in quality.
Cleaning with a brush is pretty easy, they make it so you just remove the hopper, take out the burr and dust it off a little.
Takes a minute max, not a lot more work than running water through ceramic burrs.
If you want a deeper clean, then it gets a little inconvenient, but that's only a once a month thing.
