What is the worst tasting whiskey you have ever tasted?

For me, it's Talisker 10.

The worst whiskey I've ever tried was Proper 12. I bought a bottle when it first went on sale for shits and giggles. I can't fucking drink it. Then i gave it away to one friend and he gave it back, and said that none of his other friends wanted it either. Then i gave it to another friend who's seemingly has no taste buds as he drinks and eats the worst shit imaginable, well he gave it back too.

McGregor can fight, and good for him for making a new brand for himself, but holy fuck is it a horrible fucking "whiskey"

The antishill is mad that Talisker is worse than it was when he was a kid, and it's absurdly expensive where he's at.
The rest of them are staunch believers in the non-chill filtration, no coloring meme. Even though the evidence suggests chill filtration slightly improves / doesn't change flavor, improves texture, coloring doesn't impact flavor, and lack of coloring doesn't sufficiently incentivize additional aging or heavier use of wine casks. Alright you hookers, lets do this.
I've had these three bourbons before, but never side by side. Disclosure: Old Forester is the only one I drink regularly. The Bulleit is the tail end of a 1.75L, WT101 50ml was left opened for a couple of hours before pouring, and the OF100 has been open for a few days. All three pours sat in the glass for about 20min before tasting.
I'm no good at describing smells/tastes. IMO they are all tasty but if I had to rate them:

OF100 >>> Bulleit > WT101

People seem to be shilling Wild Turkey 101 a lot here. It's solid, but out of these three I find that it has the faintest, most uninteresting nose. The Bulleit has more going on in that regard and the OF100 more so. Palate wise I like Old Forester the best, being more on the chocolaty, chalky, tannic side. It's easily the most complex of the three and evolves a bit on the tongue.

Never has it made sense. Not only should any serious review take 5 or 5.5 to be average (and you can even skew it by sales volume and say whatever Johnny Red is is the definition of average), but it doesn't seem like Ralphy has any sort of preferences whatsoever. You'll see very similar whiskies with wildly different ratings all the time.

Despite all the bullshit brand wars here, your review scores should have a roughly tight grouping for Laphroaig/Ardbeg/Lagavulin/Talisker above 55/100 if you like peat and below that if you hate it.
Or even more specifically there should be a correlation between Laphroaig 10/Select/QC, Ardbeg 10/An Oa/Wee Beastie, Lagavulin 16/12/8, and Talisker 10/Storm/Skye and from that you should be able to tease out specifically the things you like ignoring shit like organic stickers and locality.

If you want a gentle introduction to islay, its ok. Much more gentle smoke/peat than Laphroaig or Ardbeg.

Personally I think you're better off buying cheaper bourbons and spending a bit extra on single malt. Tesco had Woodford Reserve for £20 and Wild Turkey 101 for £23. Id go for something like that over Bowmore, or id spend the extra and get Ardbeg.

I do agree that as far as Islays go, Bowmore isn't great. But Woodford Reserve and WT101 aren't at all in the same tier at all, and you should be expecting to pay 30% less for those.

Sainsburys and Morrisons have Laphroaig Select for £23, I'd go for that.

Or rather, I'd probably go for something off sale that is just across the board regionally cheaper like Bunnahabhain or Penderyn, or shit we don't get.

Thank you. They do use new American oak, but as a finish, not the entirety of aging:
>Our Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, waits 14 years as the whisky matures in ex-bourbon American Oak casks. He then finishes the whisky in charred new American oak barrels supplied by The Kelvin Cooperage in Louisville, Kentucky.
I could have been more specific. What I'm wondering about is basically 100% malted barley aged exclusively in new American oak, but maybe that's just not a thing.

Those points are somewhat contradictory.
You can get an entry level Speyside like Glenfiddich.
You can get an approachable but not cheap sherried whisky like Glenrothes.
You can get an unapproachable and not cheap islay like Ardbeg.
And that's probably got you covered.

If you try to go cheaper on sherry you're probably just going to get little to no sherry being used to polish a turd of a whisky.
If you try to go cheaper on Islay you'll get a blend, and most of those are so lacking in peat that it barely counts, or they're not that cheap because you're buying something like Talisker.

>> No.15394394

>>15394105
The third term is "not scotch," because scotch forbids the practice of aging in new barrels and likes to call barrels that once held bourbon new or first fill.

Look to Australia (though there'll be a lot of wine barrels) or Taiwan. Neither produce much in the way of age statements though. Japan's laws are equally permissive, but they won't tell you jack shit, and the style favors subtlety.

Thanks fellas. I did some googling, and it does look like there are a few that fit the bill:

Auchentoshan Virgin Oak
>Touched for the very first time, the American oak barrels utilized here were new, not used prior to the Auchentoshan distillate filling the barrel for maturation. First released in the winter of 2013, the whisky has been been bottled at a nice 92 proof to enhance the wood spice aromas. This is a limited release so get it while you can.

Tomatin Cù Bòcan Virgin Oak
>Tomatin Cù Bòcan single malt is a lightly peated whisky, matured in a combination of sherry, virgin and bourbon casks. For this release however, Tomatin has chosen to mature it fully in virgin oak casks. Only 6,000 bottles of Tomatin Cù Bòcan Virgin Oak were released in 2015. It is the second in a series highlighting the individual cask styles of Cù Bòcan.

Glen Garioch Virgin Oak
>Virgin wood is referring to the never been used American white oak barrels utilized to age this single malt. Bourbon is aged this way, but traditionally, Scotch is aged in used bourbon barrels. Bottled at 96 proof, this Highland malt is an example of trying new flavor profiles and techniques in what is sometimes thought of as a staunch and traditional category.

Might be a bit harder to track down though.

How can that be. I've had 18 year old Elijah Craig and it's fine. Even if they aged these for 18 years, it would be in a cooler climate than Kentucky. Does malted barley just not stand up to a barrel the way a bourbon mashbill does?

You're getting sweetness from corn, spice from rye and char from the bourbon barrel in a bourbon, all helping to cover up that tannic astringency. Malt provides none of that.
