Air fryers are just "as seen on tv" convection ovens, and I put them in the same category as slow cookers. They are cheap, low effort, low difficulty ways to make inferior versions of the real thing (air fried food is still baked food, which will always be inferior to actual fried food, while slow cookers are basically slop machines that cost the same as enameled dutch ovens, which are much more versatile). If anything, I'd compare sous vide to a good rice cooker. It takes longer, but the product it produces isn't something that you can do with conventional means. No, you cannot make rice in a pot on the stove that's as good as a Zoj; if you don't care about the difference in quality (and convenience, in the case of the rice cooker) that's fine. Nobody is claiming they're essential kitchen appliances for everyone.
