Got two of each of these bad boys on sale for 25 bucks, both excellent wines and a steal for the $. Only other etna rosso I've had that was better was closer to 100 dollars, but did outperform a few of the much more expensive wines I drank in the same timeframe

>>15349928
avoid chardonnay under 30 dollars unless it is from france or specifies that it's unoaked, the bulk of these are oak bombs with full malolactic fermentation to get that really buttery quality that 40-and-up women love. They're also still in the nasty habit of bottling as off-dry or even semi-sweet wines. Kendal Jackson is fortified with late harvest gewurstraminer, for example.

that being said, El Enemigo is a fantastic and kinda weird chardonnay for about 25 dollarydoos, they let flor develop so the wine's got a savory edge like roasted nuts

>>15349965
thanks! I guess I'll stick to sauv blanc until my food budget gets a little higher. I picked up a pouilly-fumé last week that I'm excited to try, but I hesitate to insist on just French stuff and look pretentious as a result

>> No.15350054

>>15350033
Pouilly-fume is a great into to french wine, you can also consider white bordeaux for the yin to new zealand sauvignon blanc's yang, more restrained, mineraly, and limey, less tropical/gooseberry/grapefruit

Otherwise alsacian riesling/gewurstraminer/pinot gris are similar but different if you're craving variety, just make sure to check dryness levels if the wine/label specifies. All grand cru wine will be dry, but some of the wines get very ripe and developed despite lack of residual sugar.

Chilean chardonnay is often more lightly oaked and even completely unoaked compared to california if you want to give it another shot.

Wine Folly is the best intro out there, it's general enough without being cursory to give you most of the info you need about any given grape/region/topic. Drinking wine will teach you regions and grapes, but there are plenty of classroom-setting trainings you can do and more gritty, detailed books too.

I work in wine and have done a combination. Texbooks are the quickest way to learn geography/terroir to a point, which will give you a serious leg up on normies, but a lot of weird niche regions and grapes get overlooked until you stumble upon them and read some old-ass feature from 2005 on a wine blog somewhere.
