Gillette razors are the most overpriced crap on the planet.

For me, it's Feather blades and Proraso shaving cream. Could I go cheaper than Feather and Proraso? Absolutely, but Proraso smells and feels great and Feather blades are extremely sharp.

If you haven't learned that DE Razors are the only thing you should ever buy, you've been missing out. Astra blade are like 20 bucks for 100 and a razor is cheap as well. Pick your aggressiveness for your skin and you're good to go, razors are cheap enough to try a few.

If you get a sample pack of blades I suggest you write down your impression of each type for later. What works for one face might not work for another, so it's not just a matter of buying the sharpest one (which I believe is still Feather)
Dorco ST-300 is the sweet spot for me personally. Nice and cheap too.

Most of them take disposable blades.
I have a few "proper" ones but the ones that take regular cheap blades are just so very convenient.
You don't have to be a hipster to use a straight razor either. If you regularly grow a beard and then shave it off it really is the way to go. They don't gunk up the way cartridge razors, and to a lesser extent safety razors, do when removing a lot of hair.

This is why some folks can get 10 shaves from a derby and only 2 or three from a feather

I used to be guilty of the "just one more shave with this blade" mentality but then I thought about it and convinced myself that saving those few cents wasn't worth the hassle.
I do maybe 3 or 4 shaves with a Dorco blade, but if it doesn't feel perfectly smooth I just change it instead of pressing on.
Blades are cheap as shit, especially compared to cartridges. No need to torture yourself even with the high-end ones like Feather.

They purposely sold you the razor below cost price so it was far cheaper than their competitors to gain new customers and build brand loyalty. It's not hard. I cut myself a little at first (I didn't know about safety razors, brought a straight razor, and never had anyone show me how to shave), but you get used to it pretty quick.
Straight razors are fun to use (it's basically meditation for me, forces me to stop thinking about work), but can be pretty time-consuming. I have trouble doing specifically the jawline with those, and the area across the face from the dominant eye (you can guess why).
Safety razors are a breeze like none other.
Shave after a hot shower if you are prone to cutting yourself.
I don't even know what shaving cream does.
