Last night my dad heaved himself off the couch and rummaged about under the cabinet, finally popping into the dining room asking if he could use the pot, not pan, he was holding. It was an old one so we granted permission. He rinsed it for some reason and then scooped in a pack of pre-cooked little smokies, making sure to wash his hands after though again I'm not sure why.
I heard the stove click on in the kitchen and shortly after when I went to wash my plate noticed he had defaulted as usual to the largest burner on the highest setting, flames licking over the side of the pot like it was a cauldron. And he stood there, shaking the overcrowded pot every few seconds, aiming an infrared thermometer into it. Since I like the pot I went to save it, turning the flame down, and adding some water which boiled almost immediately, while making a point to mention that this is what he always does and is the reason he cant be trusted with the better cookware. Unfazed and uncomprehending, he continued shaking the pot until finally dumping the contents onto a dish, slathering them with sweet BBQ sauce, and microwaving them then shuffling back to to TV.

Every time he gets near any tool it's like this. i can't even hand him a screwdriver without worrying I'll have to go check behind him. My mother and I had to ban him from the good knives and cookware because he refuses to learn proper technique and we became tired of the extra maintenance and cleaning. Not that she's much better; she prefers uses a paring knife for absolutely every task and it drives me nuts. I know I sound like a cunt but you would too.

I lived in their place, then they moved and let me rent the old place for cheap. This allowed me to save money and have a decent life even though my job was kinda shit.

Once i got a better job i started paying them market rent and looked for a place of my own. Even now that I’m almost 30 and moved out they always want to help. Have me come home for food, use the family cell phone plan so i get a better rate, and they are helping my bro and sis too.

I plan on doing the same thing for my kids. You’re keeping all the money in the family and continuing to build wealth. Even if my brother or sis does poorly, i still plan on letting him live with me or helping out when my parents are no longer able to now that theyre retired. I’m investing in my family and our legacy to make sure we don’t end up on the street. And I know theyd do the same for me.
