you can have a general idea of what you want but grocery stores rarely have (complete) online catalogs with prices and rotate stock all the time. you cannot know if an item you want will be there and at the same time items you didn't see last time might be there now. Since there can be strong coupling between items shopped for it makes sense to build your list as you shop and only enter with ideas of things you want to make or want to look for.
