Why are there no pick n mixes in the US? This is was one of my favorite parts of living in england as a child.

There are. We call them penny candy stores. Not exactly common, but we have them. Many grocery stores have a small section that's similar as well.

There are plenty of these in the US. At least in the Beforetimes.

They're still dotted throughout the country. The reason so many closed had nothing to do with sanitation and everything to do with big candy corporations like hershey's and mars marketing campaigns. So many american kids would rather have a giant size snickers than a handful of small treats that many penny candy stores lost too much profit to stay open.

Might as well not be in the US. I’m in Colorado, and most malls have these types of candy stores as well as some of the grocery stores. They’re not super common, but hardly rare here.

Every indoor mall in the US had a candy shop through the late 90's-early 00's. As mall cultured changed, they went away- along with the video arcades and puppy mills.
I liked going to a candy shop, because I could fill a bag with just buttered popcorn jelly belly.

Not worth it. Bulk candy doesn't sell fast enough here to not stale or simply justify taking up that much space. Where you will find it, oddly enough, is in Fleet Farm. So you can grab your firearms, clothes, pesticides, ammunitions, and candy all at once. I've literally gone there and grabbed massive bags of sour worms and my ammo (both are coming to the range,)

I saw them as a child. Last few times I saw them were in malls that had movie theatres as part of the mall.
I haven't seen these candy only ones in a long time in groceries, where they were just something people stuck their dirty hands in. But, Whole Foods as late as 10 years ago was my go to stop before taking a flight. I'd get some plane snacks by the pound. This was a good way to get a mixed nuts w/o salt, since a lot of their tubs were meant for vegans who cooked their own nuts. WF is a good place to pick up some chocolate of unusual origin and flavor too, like dried cherry hazelnut dark.
