What do you think of Natto?

It's pretty damn good, love it with rice. It has an interesting flavor, and the Bacillus subtilius is apparantly healthy in that they make specific B vitamins.

I like it quite a bit. I'm actually getting ready to order a culture to start making it at home.

I really like fermented foods and Japanese foods, so I'm also developing a koji program for my home kitchen.

Gross texture, flavor is fine. Would probably like it if it didnt feel like someone sneezed soybeans out

Slimy foods are called by the ideophone "neba neba" in Japan, where they are enjoyed and valued as comfort food. In the west we might typically think of comfort foods being something crunchy or chewy, but in Japan it's typical to find slimy foods enjoyable. It's just a matter of getting over mental hurdles desu.

Don't US Americans like macaroni and cheese as comfort food? That also has a more "slimy" or maybe "creamy" texture.

Good point. A lot love creamed corn as well. Cottage cheese. Jello.

True, macaroni and cheese is a little bit "slimy." Maybe Americans are just picky babies.

Natto isn’t too bad texturally, I ate it with ease. The room temp seaweed goop they sometimes serve you for traditional breakfast was difficult to get down for me. Straight up loogie texture.

>> No.15306149

I tried it on my one trip to Japan --it was a breakfast option at the beef bowl joints. I liked it enough that I have it occasionally with grits now.

It's another 'ck pretends to like some weird ancient pre-refrigeration rotten tier garbage to own the normies' episode. Can't wait for you guys to drink piss to own the normies and how your palates are so developed you can taste the subtle hints of dragon fruit in the fresh piss

>> No.15306686

Honestly, I have a pretty varied palette and will eat anything but I could barely get through one bite. It just tasted like rotten beans to me. This was from a packet I got at a supermarket though so maybe it would be better fresh? I don't know, I couldn't stand the flavor, whereas I can eat century eggs on their own.

When I was in Japan the only people that ate natto were old Asians and tourists. Most younger people seemed to avoid it...at least that's my experience

Creamy and slimy arent the same thing. Closes you can get in the US is raw oysters at an oyster bar as far as texture goes

Oh fuck I forgot about okra! I grew up eating it in the south and it can be pretty slimy

This is a good example. It's not traditional to Japan but has gotten very popular there anyway due to its slimy texture.

Oh I don't shit on people for liking it, it just seems to be dying out in Japan when I was there. I ain't bothered by the texture I personally just don't like the taste. Tripe seems to be dying out in the southern states now that I think about it.

Here's my lunch, natto, rice, and miso soup with nameko mushrooms (neba neba x2). The pickle is fukujinzuke.

Idk if this is a very "authentic" Japanese meal or anything, but I like it.
