Just got a cocktail shaker set for Christmas. I'm gonna try out a few recipes this week. My cousin is a nationally-ranked foam artist and coffee barista and is very knowledgeable in the subject. I want to learn everything I can about alcohol so I can compete with him out of spite

Dont worry about recipes. If you're actually trying to git good, what you need is technique. Pick a single drink (I recommend a daiquiri) and keep making it til you've got it perfect.

You never said recommend me a book. You said how do I learn, and seemed to implicate you wanted to compete "on a national level." You really thinking coming on 4chan is going to get you there?

Holy fuck, you're as useless as a bag of queef.

I am not OP, cunt. In fact I am the only one in this thread who recommended an actual solid source. You have a repulsive and puerile character and I found it worth my time to call you out so that hopefully you will improve as a person.

OP here. I'm not the guy you responded to but thank you for the input. I really just wanna show my cousing that I'm not a useless sack of shit cause he seems to do everything better than me. I'm not trying to compete with anyone else. I just want to learn how to make drinks and have proper techniques. We live in a world where any moron with a camera and a couple bottles of liquor can share their opinions and techniques to the world. I wanted to get some advice from some more experienced people so I can weed out the people that don't know what they're doing so I could later learn on my own. Again thanks for the input I'm just trying to learn and improve

Barking up the wrong tree.
Don't try to stoop to his level and be outcompeted in silly bullshit.
Devote your time and attention to literally any pursuit of the slightest value to larger society, even the most mundane. Then viciously denigrate his work as being vaingloriously useless, and unworthy of a grown man's efforts.

Well, thanks for taking my fairly shitty response and being reasonable about it. For that, a gift.

The IBA is the international bartenders association and their site is: https://iba-world.com/.. On the top right, they have a list of their 77 recognized cocktails for competition that includes recipes and instructions. The next time you're browsing Amazon or in a store, look up some cocktail books (both history and ingredients/method) and pick 1-2 that look reasonable.

Last, I'm not a big bar guy myself, but I came across a fairly short series on YouTube damn near 15 years ago (before I could even drink) that featured Chris McMillan, a popular New Orleans bartender that's been doing it his whole life. Here's a link for all the videos they produced: https://www.youtube.com/user/keithmarszalek/search?query=cocktails.. Not only do they cover some fairly common cocktails, the guy has a way of speaking about them and their history that's entertaining. His mint julep recipe was the culmination of the series and he literally recites a poem about mint juleps while he makes one.

That should be plenty to get you started and get started learning across a broad foundation. Buy a decent mixing version of each spirit (1 rum, 1 vodka, 1 whiskey, 1 tequila, etc.), learn how to make simple syrup, stock up on citrus, and then get the rest of the ingredients as you expand your repertoire.

So I suggest you get Imbibe!, as well as Liquid Intelligence. You also need good quality ingredients, and learning the technique. Do the basics. Understand how an Old Fashioned and a Whiskey Sour work, and how the Improved Whiskey Cocktail and the New York Sour came to be. Learn to stir. Learn to shake. Learn to pour and strain. Begin small, practice often. Stick to one spirit first.

You just start making things. Old fashioned. Death in the gulf stream. Ojo Rojo. After a while you just give up and just drink shit. Whicky ginger ale. Vodka tonic. Whisky with some ice. It doesn't matter. Just drink what tastes good to you. Fall into a pit of despair like the rest of us. Who cares.

before the pandemic, I'd tell you to go find a barback position, and slowly accumulate knowledge and become a bartender for a bit.
Not only will you learn and make drinks, but you will also get to know other bartenders and talk drinks with them.

probably just pick a cocktail you want to make and make it.

my first was an amaretto sour. egg white memes are fun. pretty good starter drink because there's only a few ingredients.

First of all, you need to make sure you enjoy cocktails. Second of all, you need to understand that setting up a home cocktail bar requires a stupid amount of investment in liqueurs and bitters and juices. Thirdly, pick up a simple cocktail book. I have the book Cocktail Codex which isn't necessarily simple but is less """""""gastronomical"""""" than Liquid Intelligence and lays out drinks and techniques in a meaningful, logical structure.

It helps to see cocktails being made, and on Youtube you got:

>Steve the Bartender
https://www.youtube.com/c/StevetheBartenderAUS/featured
He makes good, non-gimmicky cocktails that span the range of complexity. I think it's a good starting point to figure out flavors you like. He is also the only guy who does videos on "fun" shots for when you're entertaining for a shots-type crowd. Short videos, gets to the point, decently educational, not hoity-toity.

>How To Drink
https://www.youtube.com/c/howtodrink/featured
Fun, sometimes gimmicky. Lots of pop culture drinks. He also does things like just spend a video doing variations of how a drink and how they have been made through history. He also does videos where he just talks about a genre of spirits and tastes through a bunch with comparisons. I find it the most entertaining channel of the list.

>The Educated Barfly
https://www.youtube.com/c/TheEducatedBarfly/featured
He does a lot of nice drinks. He also does thematic drinks where he goes through a few drinks of a particular base spirit or recipe structure. This is probably the best drinks channel if it weren't for the fact that I could barely stand his personality and the stupid hamhanded "banter" they put in every episode to pad it out. The recent ones that just show him making the cocktail are the best.

>Cocktail Chemistry
https://www.youtube.com/c/CocktailChemistry/featured
I dislike the format. But other people like it, so have at it.

I'll teach you an important lesson to start with: most cocktails are stirred, cocktails made with fruit juices are typically shaken. DO NOT SHAKE MARTINIS!

Cocktail Codex is a lovely book, Liquid Intelligence is way far ahead for anyone who doesn't know what they're up to. I'd just straight up say Imbibe! first because you can get a lot out of Imbibe! without even the side of drinking.
