Does anybody actually like green bean casserole? My family still insists on making it for Christmas and Thanksgiving but no one under the age of 25 touches it.
Cream of mushroom soup, green beans, and French fried onions is such a random combination. Maybe it’s a regional thing (I’m in the northeast US), but I’d rather have southern-style macaroni and cheese then this crap.

Do they use canned green beans or fresh.

Its only trash if you make it with canned greens beans. Its soooooo much better with fresh blanched/steamed non salted beans.

Try green beans with polonaise sauce instead. No need to thank me.

It is the only truly uniquely American dish. Barbecue doesn't count. It was stolen from the Arawaks. Succotash stolen from the Wampanoag. America truly has no culinary heritage.

It was a recipe created by Campbell’s because apparently most people in the 1950s had tons of cream of mushroom soup and canned green beans in their pantry. Another thing that we can blame on boomers, their childhood nostalgia for this weird casserole has kept it around

Even though the women stayed at home all day, they were too busy smoking/drinking/fucking the various delivery men to take the time to cook a nice meal so slop like this was invented.

I tried once and I used fresh bean, it was very OK. I think broccoli would be better desu.
That said, fried onions are a based topping and I use them for noodles now.

I've never liked GBC. I'll take a polite bite or two and say shit like, "MMMM!" but that's all I'll eat.

I do, it's kinda trash but it's comforting nostalgic trash. However if you're looking to step it up use fresh green beans and make your own basic mushroom soup, it tastes the same just better in every way. You can also fry your own onions but I'm usually too lazy to do that.

my family actually does do broccoli casserole. personally my beef has always been with the cream-of-mushroom, the common substitute in our house is cream of celery.

alton brown has a video on green bean casserole I watched last night, home-fried onions, yeah. Looked real good.

>> No.15247116

I would never mix mushroom soup with green beans. We either steam green beans just until they stop squeaking when you bite and chew or casserole them a long time with onions and tomato sauce. Either way they're not a holiday dish for us. More like a sunday roast kind of dinner, especially with lamb

>> No.15247153

>>15244227
yeah, I love it
try Alton's recipe, that one's the best (although I still use canned french fried onions for it)
>>15244248
basically this, but don't use canned soup either. just make the whole thing from scratch, it's not hard or time-consuming, I usually make it the day before and then throw it in underneath the turkey to warm up

It’s good when it’s done well, but fucking everyone fucks it up. It just turns into cream-sog 99% of the time because faggots think anything with any cream product is improved by quadrupling the amount of cream. It’s not improved.

I am essentially a guard for the prison system and I cook about 8 trays of this stuff every year for the staff and some inmates. Each one of us does a different thing it's kinda like a big potluck. I always add bacon. Every year we joke when we put it on their plates we are thankful to them because without them we wouldn't have a job.

They can decline and get cafeteria food but most don't.

Maybe it IS a regional thing, because I live in the Southwest and this is like the only thing people come back for during holiday meals. There's always an abundance of leftover yam, mashed potatoes, etc., but this shit goes fast, and everyone loves it.

My family goes through like three casserole dishes a holiday of this. Its better than meat. Its better than the potatoes. Instead of desert, we have more of this. I cant explain it.

My family does broccoli cheese casserole, but it's from scratch, no canned stuff.
They do go hard on tuna noodle casserole, entirely from cans and pouches. Pretty delicious though, no lie
