Thought so, plan on buying someone a bottle of something sherried for Christmas but really have no idea about whisky desu. Trying to avoid anything that isn't single malt as you might as well be drinking anything at that point it seems, but some whiskies are also matured in multiple casks. Are these a hard pass like a blended malt?

depends on the quality of the casks used really. good quality pretty much makes it a no brainer. after that simply depends on your palate, prefences and purchasing capabilities.

Blended malts I wouldn't say you should turn your nose up at, even general blends can be pretty tasty. Glendronach 12 is a nice entry point for sherried as its plentiful, and moderately priced(some even say a bargain under $60). If you can find The Revival 15 or Allardice 18, those are even better but also have a Macallan tier price and are pretty hard to find right now.

Ardbeg has a set that comes with a 750ml bottle of Ten and 2 smaller bottles of Corryvrecken and Uigeadail for not much more than the normal price of Ten. that would be a good place to start for the marrying of sherry and peat, plus Ard 10 is good winter dram.

Sherry is dying. And with it the high quality barrels available to the whisky industry.
You can tell when a company makes their own sherry to reseason a barrel, only to pour it into the next barrel for reseasoning when it's done, ad infinitum. You get shit like Glendronach which is 100% sherry matured but less fruity than a two year Glenmorangie finishing.

>>15217111
Blended malt is a soft pass. A do your research first kind of thing.

The only thing to look out for with maturation is that you should count ex bourbon maturation as less than zero. Ex:

The Macallan Triple Cask Matured 12 Years Old sees the expert marrying of a series of single malt whiskies. These have been crafted in a triple cask combination of European and American sherry seasoned oak casks and American ex-bourbon oak casks.

So it is a blend of regular scotch whisky (ex bourbon) with some American sherry matured and some European sherry matured whisky. Which would be worse than a blend of just the latter two. Personally I also think it'd probably be worse than just finishing the whole lot in the European sherry casks, but that's very much personal preference.

I've not had much luck with both. I find that the peat overpowers the sherry in most cases. I was recently disappointed with Laphroaig PX.
Though I didn't have such a problem with Talisker Distillers (less peat). Next up I'll give Bowmore Dark & Intense a go hoping for the same (not that I was impressed with regular Bowmore because of the lack of intensity).

nice wrong opinion. Its not bitter, its mostly sweet with a slightly sour/tart finish. It gets my dick stiff with that almost salty axilla whiff on the end of a class.

Macallan is a bunch of bullshit with their Trust owners. I dont need to to take them down a peg everytime they are brought up because anybody with more sense than money should already know, but it is justified nevertheless.

The ABC store was out of both OF 86 & 100.

I snagged a bottle of Evan Williams Bonded 100 White Label since /ck/ recommended it and a small bottle of Wild Turkey. The Wild Turkey was decent, but the White Label is surprisingly good.

Next week I'm hunting down Old Forester to see if the 86 or 100 can hold a candle to Woodford Reserve.

When I first got "into whisky" I loved Laga 16, I think it was the first whisky I unequivocally decided was real fucking classy and should be my "signature drink" (yeah I was one of those people)

Then I read a long internet article about a pedo who loved Laga 16, I don't remember all the details, if it was boys or girls or what he did to them, but I do remember it went into great detail, and it was way past just "guy with problems and bad judgment", he was definitely a hard core child predator, and his "signature drink" was Laga 16

I think if I wasn't just barely getting into whisky it wouldn't have bothered me, but because of the timing it kinda killed Laga 16 for me. I still think it's great stuff but I can't feel any personal loyalty towards it.

sherry is awesome but comes in a lot of styles so ill give you a quick rundown:
fino, manzanilla: ultra fresh, appley, almondy and salty. drink cold with olives, anchovies etc
amontillado, palo cortado, oloroso: more variety within this lot but generally richer while still dry with nutty, dried fruit flavour
pedro ximenez, moscatel: extremely sweet, sip with cheese or puddings
cream: various medium to sweet blends made generally to satisfy the over-65s

hope you give some sherry a go its a great value drink

It might result in higher production but it definitely doesn't result in better whisky. Most people say that older macallan was better due to its use of pure golden promise barley and a different storage method in it's aging warehouses, and modern macallan isn't better than comparable sherried scotch from other distilleries that use much simpler setups.

>>15229420
I'm not saying scotch isn't an engineered product. All distilleries spend years engineering how they produce scotch to create a specific flavor profile based on the equipment they use, but all of the new equipment in that image doesn't result in a better end product than other distilleries with older setups.

I know Blanton’s gets shit for all the boomers that try to buy it up for their dumb horse collection but I really like the taste of it too, a nice supper club near me had a bottle at their bar and I ended up chatting about bourbon with the bartender over it.

Sample 14 was really nice, I’m not the best at describing my taste/smell sensations with whiskey yet but overall the flavor and the finish of it had a really nice balance of aged oak and vanilla to it.
I’m curious which one it is since there was a sample of Kentucky Owl hidden in there, I’ll have to get the results back from the man who sold them to me tomorrow.

I'd say depends on what you like. You listed 2 bourbons, one blended scotch and one Irish. Remember that scotch and irish whiskies are usually made from barley and that bourbons are made from at least 51% corn (rest are a mix of other grains).

If you like smokey, look for a peated whisky (scotches from the Islay region fit this bill). If you like something lighter and want to stay in the US, look at more wheated bourbons (Jefferson's is one that falls into this category). Something a bit spicier, maybe take a look at rye whiskies (the High West labels are pretty damn tasty).

For cheap, decent whiskies (no particular order/region ~$50 or less), I'd recommend:

Tin Cup, Eagle Rare, Bulleit, High West, Balvenie 12, Woodford Reserve (pretty smooth bourbon), Laphroaig 10 (is very smoky/peaty/almost leathery), Bushmills 10 (irish whisky). If you might like a bit sweeter whisky, try Crown Royal (not the flavored ones, those suck). Crown's a simple, sweet and decently smooth Canadian whisky but I personally use it as a mixer.

At least Lidl is transparent about it. You'd be hard pressed to find budget whisky without caramel coloring. The cheapest here is, iirc, Cutty Sark Prohibition which is like 20€ here (a great blend for the price, try it if you haven't yet. 50% abv, no chill filtering. Nothing like the standard cutty).

>Clydesdale scotch whisky Co
That's whyte & mackay iirc. The same folks who make the Queen Margot blends. The 3y.o one is like 6€ here.

I currently have a bottle of Glen Turner (Glen Moray) 12 single malt scotch that I paid €20 that doesn't have any mention of caramel and the color is believable
the taste is unremarkable, but what can you do
>Cutty Sark Prohibition
never heard of it, I'll keep an eye out
>queen margot
well the last time I got a bottle of that was a few years ago, but the quality really wasn't comparable to the Ben Bracken NAS
>flavor profile
the smell has a bit of lemon, barley, maybe possibly honey and doesn't have much acetone at all
the texture is very fluid, not oily
the taste is quite immediate, with apple, a bit of liquorice, almond, a tiny bit of lemon, a tiny bit of ginger, and there's that bit of alcohol burn that's typical of younger scotch
the aftertaste is alcohol, somewhat dry some more lemon and generic citrus fruit, some vanilla and a tiny teeny bit of peat, it doesn't last long but it's comparable to the lower end of brand name whiskies rather than the higher end of supermarket blends
>spyeside
not necessarily, the blue NAS single malt I have tastes like a lighter highland offering, it's not nearly sweet and fruity enough to make me think of spyeside
Ben Bracken is the independant bottling brand of Lidl's, they offer all sorts of whiskies of decent quality from a number of different distilleries, so there's no specific Ben Bracken character to speak of, the only way is to try them all

up to your preferences and what you can get in your stores. just all around good distilleries. that was me again. el dorado 15 is a solid rum, but more on a.. sweet and tons of added sugar side, women like such rums because of sweetness. but I'd reccomend to my fellow whisky guy to start with Appleton Estate 12, Hampden or FourSquare rums. first two are good for the price and forsquares (all of their rums, they have a cheaper versions like doorleys and so on) are just top notch, but still Jamaican rums have a special funk in it, those are like rums Islay (Appleton and Hampden)

european settlers. it was the britts particularly who build rum industry and distilleries in Jamaica and Barbados. thats why this rum is much better, because they dont use fraud-tier s*lera aging and mostly distill their rums as scots make their whisky: copper stills, proper aging and no deals against the quality. you should really add the rum to your collection, you're the guy?>>15224320 right? buy Appleton estate 12, wont cost you a lot. then come here and make a thread when you crack those babies and start your whisky jerney

It's No7 filtered again.

Great as a mixer, not so much as neat/rocks due to muted flavors. The price point is too high because plenty of cheaper and better whiskeys that shine neat or mixed. OF100, OGD BiB, EW Single Barrel or BiB, EC Single, Knob Creek, Woodford, Memealo Trace.
