Autism = asocial is actually misunderstanding of autism. There are multiple dimensions to it and it's more complicated than people will understand from skim reading an article. Being asocial isn't even necessarily the core symptom but more of a trait that tends emerge from other tendencies and prolonged social rejection. There is a theory of autism called weak central coherence theory that suggests autism is a result of a cognitive style that puts more weight on details rather than the bigger picture, seeing the trees but not the forest. This can be advantageous in certain areas where attention to detail matters but will often cause shortcoming in areas that rely on tracking many things at once, like social awareness or executive function. This can mean their minds will be very fragmented. If normal awareness is like a floodlight, autistic awareness is more like a spotlight, narrow but intense.

The reasons they might be disinterested in socializing is a fixation with their special interests to point that they neglect everything else. The other reason is rejection growing up. When prisoners are locked in solitary confinement, at first they are often desperate for even the smallest human interaction but with prolonged solitary confinement they eventually lose the motivation for it.

Beyond those two reasons autists can be very social, even if they are oblivious at times. If you go on autistic forums or subreddits you'll find many of them can be tribalistic when they rant about neurotypicals, which they often call "NTs."

TDLR: an autistic special interest could certainly manifest as preoccupation with tribalism, or indeed anything.
