That's a very simple approach to whisky, anon.
A lot of them, especially something like Ardbeg, can benefit immensely from a little splash of water to open up the more subtle flavours.
Maybe you should try that yourself instead of just posting memes on /ck/ about it.

It doesn't "open up" flavors. It separates the guaiacol from the alcohol, causing it to float to the top, so your first sip is super flavorful then every sip after that is less flavorful than if you would have chosen not to dilute it like a man of culture.

>A lot of them, especially something like Ardbeg, can benefit immensely from a little splash of water
Very few of them and definitely not Ardbeg.
What you are doing with the water is bringing guaiacol (and perhaps other oil based compounds) to the top. Which gives you a smokier (and more one dimensional) first sip, followed by the rest of the dram which has been robbed of its flavor. In the off chance that you really like that one smoky note, are the kind of person who only cares about the first sip, and are drinking the rare whisky that is improved by the one smoky note, then sure add water. But if that's you, don't buy Ardbeg. Stick with something like Ardmore Legacy or Johnny Black.

Actually the other possibility is that you don't like the whisky, suffer through the extra intense first sip and then are less affronted by your diluted whisky. But if that's you just dilute the whole bottle beforehand.

Distilleries like to maintain a standard flavour for their core range. They might get casks that don't fit that profile in which case they look to do something different with them.

Some distilleries will release single cask or limited edition ranges, others will sell casks to independent bottlers (some do both).

Theres no rule but in general you can expect indy bottlings to show cacteristics of the distillery but different to what you would usually taste. Of course you could get a bottle that is wildly different to the standard from that distillery or it could taste very similar.

Most mail order places charge a flat rate for shipping, at least for the first X bottles, so the key is to buy multiple bottles at once to split the shipping cost between them to make it more reasonable.
1 bottle @ $16 shipping sucks ass. 3-4 bottles at $16 shipping is a bit easier to swallow.
Drizly mostly ships from other stores that have their own websites. It is worth using for a while just to use Drizly promo codes but I haven't used it since I ran out of those.

I have only tried five ypes of scottish whiskey before:
Auchentoshan (three woods)
Famous grouse (8)
Glenfiddich (12)
Johnny walker (Black)
Grant's (no idea)

Johnny walker was fine and aschentoshan was okay, ehile Grant's was meh, but glenfiddich was not something I enjoyed and god help us all what the fuck is the Famous Grouse famous for?! The famous grouse tastes like perfume - disgusting.

Personally, I prefer wine derivatives, like brandy, cognac and armagnac.

But would you have any recommendations for whiskey that's similar to black label that I could try? I am not well-versed on the whiskey vocab (flavor types etc.) So I am not sure what böack label is usually described as and what to look for.

For how long would you store whiskey in a steel flask? Would a month be fine?

Chinesium makes it impossible for us to provide an answer but you could figure it out with an experiment. Cheap metal will most likely reveal itself.

Take the most neutral and clear alcohol you have and put equal amounts in the flask and a glass mason jar (control) and let them age. After a month compare the their colors, taste, smell, etc... If you're happy with it them it's probably fine to drink. After that I'd put them back in their bottles and let them age for an entire year or more. The longer you age without changes the more confidence you have in your flask.

Label them with in and out dates so you don't accidentally drink too early.

That's correct. There is no way I'm getting Redbreast for 40 bucks.
I am getting it for under 40 bucks at Costco. I'm not aware of it being this cheap anywhere else, Total Wine included.
Costco is CRAZY cheap for booze and you don't even need to be a member in some states to buy booze there; they are legally obligated to sell booze to you in some states.

Bit of a tangent. I've been going through a 1.75 of the bourbon and I have to say, it's pretty amazing how good even an "entry level" spirit like bulleit can be. I'm using a little nosing glass, adding a few drops of water, letting it sit in there for a while to oxidize, and then just paying attention when I nose/drink the stuff. There's really a lot going on to appreciate.
We are truly blessed.

I personally don't consider bulliet to be entry level. But i may be misremembering the pricing when I was in college. In college I thought it was like 35-40 per fifth but now i'm seeing it at 20-25 like other entry level bourbons. Weird.

as always in these threads, people are forgetting that alcohol itself numbs the taste buds. It's the same as cold ice which numbs your taste.

I add quite a lot of water to my whisky because the taste is just more profound (like wine), rather than a numb mouth unable to taste the finer notes.

THAT BEING SAID:

its up to preference, stop arguing about this shit already.
Smokers especially have a dumbed down flavor profile as it is, so to them the flavors are insignificant anyways so they would usually drink neat.
For non-smokers the alcohol can be a bit much and completely disable their months from the high ABV acting like an anesthetic.
