You need a hunting license and a registered and legally obtained firearm (if you are hunting with a firearm), and then there are certain times you can hunt certain animals in certain states with certain weapons.
For example, in my state, there is a gun season and a bow season. The gun season for deer in the fall is only 6 days, but its 3 months for bow season. Pretty neat, huh?

Of course, I could be a dickhead and illegally hunt animals on my property and probably no one would ever find out because I live so remotely, but I have no issues dishing out 20-100 bucks to keep 100% legal. There's always an off chance I could get unlucky.
