It's even more obvious in Canada. Premium soup isn't even a joke. Hamburger costs as much as chicken breast. Chicken wings cost even more than breasts and are half bones. Potatoes are $1/lb, all other vegetables are around $4/lb. Berries $20/lb.

Two of those tags are 2/$5. Shit's expensive because you shop at an expensive grocery store that runs 'sales', but non-sale items are hugely marked up...probably has a rewards program as well. Say what you want about Walmart, but their 'everyday low prices' are actually low. They don't run food sales like that, just the same markup on everything, so it averages out to be cheaper on each shopping trip. HEB does the same thing, ends up being much cheaper than Kroger because they don't use the sale model. It's been a while since I've lived in Florida, but IIRC Publix does the same thing (although I could be wrong).
