My friend lent me their card for me to keep until next week. I just went to costco for the first time ever a couple hours ago, and holy shit. Not only is there a great selection/value for amount, its pretty damn tasty as well.

I'm going back tomorrow. What are the best things to buy at costco?

I've always been confused by Costco, Sam's Club, etc. They do have some good deals, but 95% of the products there aren't actually any cheaper than getting it at a regular grocery store. They just sell it in bulk. If you compare the price per weight, it's often significantly worse. Their meat and cheese are particularly bad.

OP whatever you do dont buy junk food or impulse buys of perishable goods. This is a trap a lot of people fall into, if you buy like cookies or chips or crackers there you'll just eat more because more are there, and you spend a ton on them because they are in bulk. Same with persishable goods, you spend a lot buying in bulk and you'll eat more so it doesnt spoil or go stale like bakery items or anything else.

Unless you're buying for a lot of people, only buy a manageable level of perishables and buy mostly dry goods (besides junk) and freezable stuff

I'm really fucking pissed at Costco. They quit carrying ALL of the good cheeses here. Now they only have commodity-grade crap which barely qualifies as "cheese-like product", and except for the "mozzarella" and the "cheddar" they are all pre-sliced or pre-shredded, so they're covered with disgusting anti-molding agents.

They also went from two 48-oz jars of peanut butter to three 16-oz. So you get half as much and they only dropped the price 15%.

It's not "principled". They force manufacturers to cheapen their products until the products become so bad that nobody wants them any more.

I've seen it happen repeatedly:
1. A new food product is introduced. Its quality is fantastic, it tastes wonderful, it's cheap, you go wild for it.
2. At three months, they reevaluate their contract with the supplier and tell it to slash costs. Costs are cut, quality drops, the product is barely edible.
3. Another three months, another reevaluation, another "cut costs or be cut out". The product now tastes like dogshit in a box.
4. Everyone stops buying the product.
5. Costco stops stocking the product, and the supplier loses business everywhere because everyone seeing the same product in a grocery store thinks "oh, there's that dogshit in a box, not gonna buy that ever again."

Wal-Mart pulls the same crap. "Make it cheaper! Substitute plastic for metal! Move your production to China!"

Sardines (they sell a 6-pack for ~$10, on sale it's like $7.50)
Brie sampler
Shredded cheese (they have 2x 2.5lb shredded mexican cheese blend bags for I think $8-12)
Laundry detergent (only need to buy like once every other year)
Dish soap
Dishwasher packets
Toilet Paper/Paper towels/moist wipes
Bacon (I like the thick cut 2x 2lb packs for $12)
Their bakery croissants (12x for $6, pretty good for breakfast sandwiches, like to make bacon, egg, cheese and some guac on them)
Large packs of Cholua
Kikkoman low sodium soy sauce
Bulk sugar (for making jams/preserves)

They have pretty decent prices on salmon (fresh and smoked, though I'm told to avoid the norwegian salmon due to the waters near Norway not being so clean, dunno how true that is) and beef. I've gotten a large amount of pork shoulder for like $2/lb. Also, at the costcos near me they do sell windshield wipers so I try to replace them once a year and each blade is like $6. They have most sizes for the front windshields, but may not always have the smaller sizes for rear ones. If you like snacks, they have an assortment of jerky/chips/crackers/etc. I occasionally get one of those huge boxes of cheeze-its. Decent beers there too.

As someone that goes to Costco at least monthly I don't think so but it is close. But only by a small margin. Here in WA milk will be 3.50 but at Costco I can get two gallons for 5.20ish I tend to go through 4 gallons a month which is about 40 saved over the year. The 20 reminder would likely be made up by my cheese and butter purchases. And even if not, whatever I don't make back I consider fair game for access to Kirkland brand oil and such.

Toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap, butter, eggs, black peppercorns, shampoo and soap, and some snacks like jerky make it worth it for me. You're going to use most of that stuff anyway, so just buy it in bulk, you'll save more than 60 bucks eventually. Its even better if you split the membership with somebody else.

I read an artical last year, Costco doesn't even make a profit on what they sell - they sell it practically at cost. They make all their money from the membership. E.g. you can't get most things anywhere else cheaper.

I'm in Asia. The fuckers just stopped buying peanut butter now also. I confirmed that they have none in back, none on order, and no plans to get any more ever.

Peanut butter and cheeses were the only two reasons I bought a membership. You couldn't get real cheese anywhere else here (the stuff in the grocery stores is not even Velveeta level quality, you can't even melt it because it turns into a puddle of vegetable oil and nothing else), and now you can't get it at Costco either.

Freeze meats that you won’t use, just remember to thaw it before you go to work. Buy a vacuum sealer as it keeps food fresh longer and provides a nice way to marinate. As for the cados, refrigerate and use immediately so it doesn’t go to waste. Unironically, avacado toast, guac, “homemade chipotle bowl”, or just use it as a side as it has great protein and healthy fats

I like to stop by Costco to use the crapper. For some reason the bathrooms are right next to the break room for employees. So if you have the particular skills for the job, you can stink up the bathroom so bad that it wafts into the break room, and make those wagies smell your shit until someone cleans it up! By that time I am usually refeeding in the food court.

$1.50 for hot dog and soda with a free refill is a good deal, and if you add a couple slices of pizza its a filling meal. Pro-tip, order a whole pizza before you head to the crapper and it'll be ready by the time your done!
