My dad recalls this place as having been his first choice for hamburgers when he was a kid, but they're completely defunct now. They were a small regional chain that basically cribbed off of the ideas of other early fast food restaurants and did them better, but when those actual restaurants (McDonald's, White Castle) finally started encroaching on their market with more spending power and lower costs, they went under.

I remember it, haven't seen one in person since like 1991 or so when we moved from the Detroit suburbs to the Chicago suburbs. Never really went there since there were Arby's and Hardee's closer by for roast beef sandwiches (yes, Hardee's used to have them along with hamburgers up until the early to mid 90's I think). My most significant memory from that Rax in Michigan was the time a pimp and one of his whores came in, wearing the exact stereotypical outfit you'd expect. First time I ever saw one in person.

My stock in Dunkin' is doing amazingly well since the acquisition. Up to $106 earlier today.
However, I'll agree with you that it will be a shell of its former self here in the next five years max as I fully expect a lot of changes to be implemented for cost-saving measures.

They were insanely crunchy without being greasy and the flavor was phenomenal. You could put them in the fridge and the next day they would be just as crunchy and almost as delicious even cold. They also had a California burger and pastrami burger that would knock your socks off. They also had breakfast burritos that were bar none. Then one day inexplicitly the management changed and they turned it into a fucking teriyaki bowl place under the same name. I have never been butthurt over a food place until then. Yeah it's really generic but I guess that's why I love it. I had a burger after 20 years and it was exactly the same as when I was a kid. The onion rings are great too but the ranch they give you is sub par. If you go make sure to ask for the fries and anything else to be done crispy otherwise it's not as good.

Whittier is a strange place for sure, uptown is all old stuff and old quaker houses and a few blocks away it's essentially the ghetto. The crazy thing is everyone seems to be racist as fuck in Whittier, even minority vs minority.

If you think the name on a sign is all that makes a restaurant what it is, then I don't think you have a place in this thread. Some gook in new jersey bought the name about ten years ago and is the fifth or sixth owner of the name. The current locations are in no way comparable to what the chain used to be.
Herfy's used to have ~100 locations at its peak but went bankrupt and shut down some time in the late 90's. It was the local chain that kept mcdonalds out of the pnw for a long time. Cheap burgers, open late, greasy food, and most importantly half the menu wasn't chinese food.

Fuck dude I loves this place! Yes you're right you couldn't close the box you had to eat a bit before you take it home. My favorite thing about that place they had the best lemon chicken. But they had so much variety of the chicken; orange, lemon, lime? And I can't remember. But that shit was good.

Do you happen to have a place called Cheddar's in your state? The only place I've seen serve a Monte Cristo with jam ever

Shoneys is still around. I went to one for lunch in WV a couple of years back and ordered a rare steak plus a salad and side when I was hung over. Felt like a million bucks afterwards and it cost like $8 total. Now I stop whenever I see them. I love Shoneys

Speaking of dead restaurants, I really liked this place and so did my late mother.
She rarely ordered beef, but once we went to a destination wedding at some kind of campground and they only had vegetarian food all weekend. She was so pissed off about how awful everything was I don't even think we stopped at home first, she drove us right here and ordered prime rib for herself and said it was the best she'd ever had.
Especially hilarious because I honestly don't remember the wedding food being that bad.
