My google-fu says that the average cost for a 1 BR with a kitchen in Tokyo in Chiyoda is 123800Y, which is $1196.67. Ive made real ramen before and I know exactly how hard it was. Broth took 12 hours using pig feet and assorted veggies for flavoring, made my own chasu pork and marinated soft boiled egg as well as black garlic oil. The entire process took most of a weekend to create tonkotsu ramen and it was fucking delicious. The ramen in that pic looks like it came out of a package, although for $5 you get what you pay for but thats like visiting NYC, getting Dominos and thinking you got the full experience.

Its a little hard to get into the comparisons with American and Japanese wages. As a whole you'll get paid more in America for most jobs.
But in Japan for example, most businesses will tend to pay for other things like your commute to work and other work related costs. In America you're expected to 100% cover that on your own.

The other big thing is cost of living, land is expensive as fuck in Japan, but the rest of the costs are relatively small in comparison to America. So while paying for a house in tokyo would be ridiculous even compared to NY, unlike NY you're not paying out the ass for every little thing you buy, so things balance out depending on what you prioritize.
So in simple terms, in terms of liquid cash what your dollar will get you in Japan is pretty high. But in terms of what Japan prioritizes can be confusing leading you to get confused and think things are more expensive than they should be. (e.g. the common example being people laughing at $100 melons in Japan. Supermarket fruit in Japan is just as cheap as in America, but they also overcharge for really nice looking fruits because Japanese are retarded)

Everyone always talks about sushi, but what are other good fish dishes in Japan?
When I went to korea we had some great fish dishes every day, though it was mostly home cooked food. Whenever I go out for asian fish its always just the simple shit like salmon steaks or tapioca. I miss eating some nicely cooked asian fish dishes that isn't just raw fish thrown on rice.
