I don't think it's "necessary" if you eat a wide variety of vegetables. That doesn't mean fruit is bad though. People get confused by learning that adding refined sugar to everything is bad so they think fruit has sugar so it must be bad too, but it doesn't really work that way. Fruit is still shown to help prevent disease and promote general physical health though, and there might still be some things in fruit that aren't in some vegetables. A varied diet is usually best too so completely avoiding fruit might not present any major issues but probably doesn't offer any major benefits either.
