Smalahove is pretty weird objectively, but I enjoy it as a holiday meal since we grew up eating it. Actually not even from Norway but both of my parents are first generation immigrants so they still like the traditional dishes. I'm not even sure if you can get this anywhere in the US, my dad rears his own livestock and he always keeps a few lambs specifically for smalahove. We usually eat this on Christmas Eve and then have lamb chops Christmas day. Pretty tasty once you get over the weirdness of it.

I grew up in Hawaii in the 80's-90's when there was a huge push for Hawaiian culture being taught in public schools, which hadn't been allowed before then (not sure how it is these days). So I basically took field trips to taro fields every year in elementary school, and had some guy come and do a poi pounding demonstration in a ti leaf skirt or whatever, and holy shit, I never, NEVER, found a taste for the stuff. There were a few guys who brought a little tupperware of poi to school every day in high school to eat with their lunch, but I don't think anyone really liked it; it was more a matter of native pride and continuing tradition. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't make me want to vomit or anything, but if I ever bought a plate lunch and poi came as a side I'd ask for some extra lomi lomi salmon instead, or even just an extra scoop of mac salad.

>Not sure why they still teach Hawaiian culture on an island full of Hawaiians

Kys

>> No.14943480

>>14943468
Terrible reading comprehension, anon. For one thing, teaching Hawaiian language/culture wasn't allowed in public schools for decades. For another thing, Hawaii isn't "an island", and it's not "full of Hawaiians". Outside of Niihau or deep in some valley you're unlikely to run into anyone who's more than 20% Hawaiian. Hawaii is literally a multi-cultural colony.

I mean shit I really don't know. There was a ramen place that tried to do a sort of prairie spin to the stuff and that was pretty gross, but that was just a single restaurant that also went under. san francisco bay area. not much to hate. the San Fran clam chowder in a bread bowl is corny and stupid. mostly its when food is bad, like lousy sourdough bread or "ghetto burrito"s: served at a store front where the cooks and cashier are behind plastic, and the burritos are made with doughy bland tortillas, unseasoned ground beef, flavorless runny refried beans, white rice, tons of grated cheddar cheese, tons of sour cream, maybe some salsa. flavorless, glorpy, way too huge, nothing lilke a proper Mission Burrito. sold mostly in poor areas of East oakland. its still a good deal in terms of calories per dollar, but a hot mess to eat. considering that just blocks away you can get an authentic mission burrito SF style at El Farolito, including mexican rice and a grilled flour tortilla with brown and burn marks to make it crispy.

we are one of the only bigger cities without a white castle in our region and I'm convinced it's because of our mom and pop slider trailer that's been downtown since the 40s. It's like white castle with better beef, twice the onions, and harder bread. once you walk in the trailer you reek of onions so bad there are times when a shower doesn't get rid of all the stank. and rarely do they even get a decent caramelization on the onions it's pretty gay

Nova Scotian here. Dunno if it's all that weird, but often as a party snack we'll put pickled herring and onions on top of uncooked Lunenburg pudding, which is a sort of blood sausage. It's a really fucking tasty combo.
