sold old TV to a couple /Creolebros/ and picked up some more Rye. let my Glendronach 12 sit for about 90 mins before i finished it while watching Stan Helsing(that prime Diora Baird tho) and man that is the best Scotch I've had thus far. kinda want to find the 15 Revival but its back to being hoarded again I think. The Rittenhouse is nicer in my opinion it reminds me more of Old Grandad 114 and the Bulleit has a dill pickle taste, didnt get any Rye taste, so dissappointed in that regard considering its "95% rye".

90% of it is for sure. While they have almost no rules in place for what can be called a whisky, it's usually so they can push out the cheapest shittiest drain pour to appeal to the homeless. But every once in a while, you'll get a place that makes some good stuff except they have barely the budget behind them to bottle and ship within their province, let alone all of Canada or even internationally. No Canadian whisky shipped internationally is good, you need to just go into liquor store, not be a social retard and get free samplings from the local distilleries. They normally have a bunch saved from previous events or just sample bottles for these scenarios

There are 3 general routes.
Desperation. You need to get drunk (alcoholism or whatever, I don't judge), and whiskey is what you found in the liquor cabinet.

Typical. You get a whiskey cocktail (7&7, manhattan, whiskey sour), like it, and start trying to more intense straight liquor. You buy a bottle or pour of a not low shelf, not top end whiskey, and find you like it, and start tasting other things.

Introduction. Someone who knows something about whiskey (sometimes that you want to suck up to for business reasons) starts pouring good stuff, and you do your damnedest to keep up and not embarass yourself.

Jack Daniels is a pretty safe entry point. Maybe order a pour of Johnnie Walker Green (Green is very different from Red, Black, or Gold; they are NOT acceptable substitutes). Rittenhouse is pretty good for the style, but it's not for everyone (if you get some and don't care for it straight, either learn to make a manhattan cocktail or soak fruitcakes in it).

Don't be afraid of the big brands; they're big because a lot of people like what they produce; you might too.

I've never understood decanters, wouldn't this just oxidize the whiskey faster? I thought it was common knowledge that the bottom of the bottle will never be as good as a recently opened one.

Totally different story for wine though since it 'opens up the flavor' - is it the same idea with whiskies?

But yea, people like sherry because it's fruity.
Just malt and wood is boring, you need at least a third dimension. And you can create that dimension (or increase it since sherry is fruiter than a naturally fruity spirit) by adding sherry casks. Or peat. Or whatever.

Try the cask strength next.
It's the only whisky I have ever had which is "balanced" yet still possesses intense flavors. Intensely flavored whiskies are typically unbalanced.

Old Grand-Dad 114 is the manliest whisky ever. That's 114 for 114 proof. With 27% rye in the mash bill, it's got spice and kick. This is not a smooth whiskey. This is a delicious, intensely flavorful, complex and balanced whiskey that'll put hair on your chest. I highly recommend this intensely masculine bottle of poison wood water.
Just look at this shit. Even the massive fucking cork is manly as shit.

Make your own manhattan.
What you'll get from a mix is nothing like a real Manhattan. That's not saying that you will like a real one more, the mix is basically just sugar (HFCS) juice so it may suit you more.

It mean's it isn't harsh. No single flavor sticks out like a sore thumb, especially the harsh booziness of alcohol itself.
What you're describing sounds more like a combination of tannic (saliva out of mouth) and oily (coats everything on the way down).

>without making a face
Good
>I won’t wake up the next morning feeling like absolute shit
Absolute horse shit.
>It means that I can taste what I’m drinking
Usually the opposite; spirits lacking in intensity are necessarily smooth.

Ardbeg has been great bang for buck for the last few years. Lagavulin has an 8 year old sold for very reasonable prices that is very high quality. The 16 is too damn high now.
Laphroaig has recently gotten worse, at least the typical 10 year old bottling. Springbank continues to be one of the best I've ever had. I've been drinking scotch for long enough to see certain brands cycle in quality, and I bet there are some cheapos on the shelves now that are actually great that I haven't discovered yet.

>> No.14902496

Redbreast is nothing special at all.
Interesting mouthfeel, but there's nothing to the flavor. And for whatever reason it costs double here.

Lagavulin 12 is also terrible value. The 16 is decent value considering the age, but the 12 costs double that.

And then you pick really over priced Japanese whisky's for the world category.

I don't think you'd know value if it slapped you in the face.

Here the 8 has only ever been $5 cheaper than the 16 and it's substantially worse.
Laphroaig Select, Ardbeg Wee Beastie, Talisker Skye/Storm, Bowmore No.1 , etc are all about the same price as their standard bottlings too.
