What was your food experience like? Did you stay with friends or family, and if so did they cook for you? How was it? How about restaurants? I'd like to hear about what you guys thought of our culinary landscape.

I hate to be cynical, but,

>>14893081
Absolutely this. Portion sizes are enormous, but it's partially because we tend to eat things without a side of bread or a preceding salad. The wastage is regrettable, but in our defense, wouldn't you rather leave with a little food left on your plate than leave a little hungry?

As a Bong that has visited multiple times and eaten in some of Americas finest restaurants, American food is worse than dog shit.
Its dog shit that has been eaten and then regurgitated multiple times, forming a toxic paste of concentrated shit and bile.
The only thing worse than American food is American people.

Lived in the midwest for a year, it wasn't great. The highpoints were probably the fast food restaurants (five guys especially) and the wild game around hunting season. I didn't stay with family in the US because I don't really have any. I have lots of family in Canada though, and despite what you think you're all the same. Their cooking was grim, let's leave it at that. In New York, the only good food was bagels. Delis and those gasoline-powered food stalls were fucking disgusting. It's mostly a story of taking perfectly good meat/cheese and putting it in a shit-tier bread before drowning it in some monstrous sauce made from blue cheese, bbq, sugar, fake mustard and whatnot. I don't fucking get it. My theory is american taste buds are completely shot due to something in their diet or water. All the chocolate was shit as well. The only american snack I can stomach is cheetos flamin hot. I was able to get a great meal at an Ethiopian restaurant in Washington though, and aside from the bagels, there were a few good ramen spots in New York.

Visit quite a lot because my Uncle is married to an American. Because I stay with them it's mostly just eating normal food I guess. Food's a lot cheaper though and the choice you get in fast food is much better than in Britain. Free refills on fountain drinks as standard is pretty neat too.
Also the Publix deli is great.

>I ate at shitty delis, food stands, and stayed in Canada for a time and the food was shit
Yes, Canadian food quality is usually a lot lower than American food. In NY, do not eat like you would in Europe by going to shithole places and food stands. In America the places that would normally be tourist traps in Europe are actually the nice places people would eat at, while hole in the walls are usually hole in the walls run by bad cooks, especially in places like NY where property prices are so high only truly nice restaurants can be in nice places.NY has some of the best food in the country, you just have to eat like an American would, not a Euro. Go to a restaurant, like the Ethiopian one, and sit down for a meal, and DO NOT just stop at a food stand and wonder why its shit. Good restaurants in this country get land, bad ones get food stalls.

Stayed with friends, and also traveled around. Food was great and I would consider it a must for food oriented travel. I was surprised how different food in each state is, in Australia every state has the same food. Fast food was over rated but had a huge variety, your maccas is shit and 5 guys was ok but a letdown. I think your fine dining is good but not the best, I ate at french laundry and 11 madison park. Normal restaurant food is great, I really liked philly cheese steak and gumbo in New Orleans, and diners were super comfy, I wish diners were the export all over the world instead of maccas. Your coffee sucked and was the only thing i missed from home. Texas BBQ was also top tier.

Been to the states a few times, specifically the Bay Area in California. Always stayed at hotels.

I did love the variety of food available there. Prices were pretty good, even considering the high cost of living in the area. I thoroughly enjoyed the large variety of ethnic food. Went to Indian food places chock full of indians, korean places full of koreans, and so forth. I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to cuisines, so these trips to the USA were fucking great, as they allowed me to get to know cuisines I hadn't tasted before. From the top of my head, I tried indian, korean, japanese, chinese, vietnamese, ethiopian, greek, among others.

I am a Mexican who's currently living in the Netherlands, and neither country gets even close to the bay area when it comes to the variety of authentic international cuisine.

I also fucking loved the large scale ethnic supermarkets, and was impressed by the high quality selection standards of some places such as Whole Foods which don't quite exist except in the wealthiest parts of my home country.

we made it using a fuk hug dough machine with 50lb bag of imported flour. I remember it was filtered water along with ice to maintain a temperature range. Lots of malt a little sugar and salt. We were supposed to use olive oil but with we cheated a bit by using a vegetable oil evoo mix due to food costs because the EVOO they called for was something around 5x the price. The best dough sat for at least 24hrs in the walk in fridge. Anything less than that tasted off and was impossible to toss and spread to the correct size.

Almost everything was legit from Italy and we had to place food orders 3 weeks ahead of time due to shipping from Italy to the warehouse in NY to California.

true story
we once got a surprise visit by Vinnie Sbarro (founders grandson) and he walked in on me and couole of my crew munching on a Chicago style pizza I had just made using our own ingredients and he heard me say how much better it tasted lol
he looked at me and said along the lines of
"oh really?"...hmmm
"that's not how we do things here" he left the kitchen for a meeting with my boss and the crew was like...awww chit

another fun fact
Sbarro paid managers a salary but required they work 50hrs a week for asst managers and closer to 60 for store managers.
it worked out to around $7 an hour when minimum wage was about $5

gulden draak is pretty sick. I've been trying to get my hands on a couple of bottles for my buddies upcoming birthday but every importer is currently out of stock. I fucking hope the 'rona didn't hit them too bad. I can only imagine how wasted I would be if i'd found a pub that had this chocolatey ambrosia on tap

Even Germany is seeing the trend of microbrewing, importing it from the USA. Except for Bavaria many old breweries ran out of business or got bought up by major breweries. Especially Berlin used to have many breweries, but the remaining mainstream brands got all bought up by a major brewery.

What kind of beers are commonly brewed by them there? IPAs are a common way for microbrews to go here which I don't like, but a lot of them also do all kinds of other stuff like stouts, porters, kolsches, wheatbeers, red ales, all kinds of stuff. Only german beers I've had have been lagers and witbiers for the most part so I don't really know what Germany has a taste for

Difficult to tell. They brew all kinds of beers. IPAs are common but so are a lot of other brewing styles. Besides common German brewing styles like Pilsenser they tend to introduce traditional brewing styles that aren’t as common in Germany like Red Ales.

Germans mostly go for Pilsener, Weißbier/Weizenbier and Lager/Helles. With Weißbier and Lager mostly being brewed in Bavaria. Usually you will find major brands like Warsteiner that are streamlined for mainstream appeal and various brands that reflect the different local preferences. The bigger often being available in the whole country. There are also various regional brewing styles like Kölsch or Schwarzbier but these aren’t enjoyed by everyone.

Because you export budweiser and coors, and national beer dominates the market.

We saw some ghetto types. Here it is mostly Arabs larping but the US specimens actually seemed to be heinous. White trash seems to be more dangerous here though other groups are catching up. Here most of them are pacified by social welfare making them less dangerous. The nasty ones however are rarely put into prison until they murder someone.
You still got snow in the Midwest, right? I am from Germany and most parts only get snow for a few a days, if at all. Winters are mild but summers are getting too hot and dry.

I visited New York city. Upper west side.
Best food was the Jewish Delis and Bagel shops. The Italian restaurants and I also liked the Mexican taco shops which seemed to be staffed entirely by Puerto Rcans.
What I found rather bland and a let down were the big chain food's that I heard so much about growing up, the McDonald's, the KFC, the Wendiy's etc.
I really liked Samuel Adam's beer in the Irish bars
