It's okay if you don't like it. Laphroaig is one of the most iodine-heavy Islays. It has a band aid nose. I recommend Lagavulin 16 for a less aggressive peat and more rounded flavor with sherry influence. Ledaig 10 is one of my favorite peaty whiskeys but there is a brine and iodine element to that one as well. Otherwise just skip the peat if it's not to your taste and quit being a little faggot about it.

Laphroaig is pretty harsh, but all peated whiskys are like that to some extent. Ardbeg is still very smoky but doesn't taste like medicine so much, maybe try that. Lagavulin is more expensive but it's very nice and the 16 year is pretty mellow. If you try a few peated whiskys and really don't like any of them then just don't drink it, you don't have to get upset about it.

Scotfag here to report that we only make Laphroaig for tourists. It's not a nice example of peated whisky. We just enjoy selling it to Americans and Asians, watching them drink it neat and insisting it's great.

I love Laphroaig but the standard 10 sucks as do most Laphroaigs out there. Stuff like the 10 Cask Strength and the Cairdeas lineup definitely show a more toffee and rich vanilla element from bourbon cask maturation that balance out the medicinal and peaty elements of the spirit, but Islay peat is definitely not for everyone the same way rauchbier isn't for everyone.

Also even if you don't like their whisky, Islay is a beautiful place for hiking and animal watching. Lots of beautiful sights and diverse bird populations with the occasional dolphin, shark and puffin sightings if you go out far. Also world class shellfish and mutton.

Reporting back in the Tomatin 14. I went out for a drink, some sort of gin and tonic, came home and had a dram of the Tomatin.
Woke up at 2 in the morning with the worst headache and proceeded to vomit then sat in the shower for 2 hours until my head stopped pounding and spinning so much. Maybe the gin and tonic was low quality alcohol and that's what set me off.
Had a singular dram of Tomatin again last night and no other drinks and the same fucking thing happened. I'm still trying to get over my headache 14+ hours later.
Not sure why it's making me feel like shit. I can drink a third of a bottle of Johnny Walker and wake up fine. I think I'm going to leave this one on the shelf and forget about it.

I spooked myself thinking it could have been tampered with, but I distinctly remember taking off the foil cap, which was fully intact when it arrived.

Nothing seems to be off-flavored about it that I can tell. Although it does smell more like a bottom-shelf scotch than other scotches in this price range, so maybe something went wrong during distillation.
I sent them an email this morning with the lot number and let them know my experience. I'll post their response if they get back to me.
