the idea is that most people will be drawn to the more mainline menu options (quarter pounder, big mac, classic chicken sandwich) but people with no money to spend can get the mcdoubles and mcchickens

if they call attention to the fact that the mcdouble has the same amount of meat as a big mac it kind of defeats their pricing strategy

same thing with burger king not putting cheese on their whopper but always asking you if you want to add it. thats where their margins are since they buy like 5000 slices of american cheese at wholesale and put them in an industrial refrigerator
