to me its like vodka. when you first have it straight its real shit and you wonder if people are mad for drinking it. but you keep drinking it, and you get used to it, and then you start to notice the flavour rather than just the sting of the alcohol. keep drinking wine, it will grow on you. pair with a good meal too and it will be even better.

The most important thing in wine is age.

A bottle from a reputable label that has been well aged will always be worth more than $100.

American wine is generally produced to be drunk sooner, though. It is not made to be aged like European wine.

This is only half-true, certain AVA/DOCs have zero or near-zero wines under 100, ie howell mountain, most of the To Kalon single-vineyards, some of the walled vineyards in Le Mesnil Sur Oger, pretty much all of the grand cru burgundies.

Paying more for high-demand terroir is about the only justification I can give. There is no reason to buy first growth bordeaux when pontet canet is generally better and in the 100-150 dollar price range, except because you make too much money.

If you want a red wine with more softness and at much better value look into:
Old-vine zinfandel from Lodi, Russian River, Dry Creek Valley, Contra Costa etc
Cotes-du-Rhone, Gigondas, Vacqueyras etc (blends of mostly grenache with syrah, mourvedre and others)
New World Syrah, best values are coming from Chile, South Africa and Hawke's Bay NZ imo
Dolcetto from Piemonte (Alba, Asti and Dogliani) is lovely and cheap usually
