I made brownies the other day form scratch, they ended up being shitty cake brownies, and cost more than a pre-made box. Made pizza realize my toppings cost more than a frozen pizza.

learn how to properly stock a pantry. it's not easy.
the only way you save money as a homecook is by really using all your ingredients before things go bad.
most retarded shit i see is when my roommate wants to make tacos so he goes out to buy an entire head of lettuce, use maybe a quarter of it, only to throw the rest out.
>What foods are you better off buying?
my pantry is mostly italian and korean. i don't have any ingredients to cook indian food at all (nor do i know how to make it) so i buy that from restaurants.

If all you are going by is "cost", you should just buy a bag of oats at the farm-feed store.

Brownies isn't one of them. Your brownies suck and are cake like because either you added a rising agent which you shouldn't or too much flour
Pizza is one of them tho, at least the dough. If you can buy raw dough then it makes no sense to make your own unless you want to show off. It's just too hard and time consuming

I completely disagree with you about the pizza. By making it at home, you build your pizza related cooking skills. Then, over time, you're making better pizza than you could buy for so little money.
As for lower quality quick pizza, you can make that at home too. Sometimes I buy bagels to have for breakfast, but sometimes I take a bagel, split it, put pizza sauce and mozzarella on it with some other stuff, usually pepperoni, and bake it. All those ingredients I have on hand anyway, and the final product ends up being better than store-bought pizza bagels for not as much money. I've done the same with flatbread if I have any on hand.

Home cooking isn't necessarily just about saving money. It's about investing in developing a skill that makes you independent of the system. Society could break down tomorrow and other people are just going to starve because the only cooking skill they have is pressing numbers on a microwave.

I'm off of delivery pizza. Delivery charges are the biggest fucking scam in the restaurant industry. They don't go to the driver, it's just an excuse for pizza chains to tell you that a $12 pizza costs $10. It's not even about the money, I just don't like paying people to lie to me. Newman's Own pizzas with the sausage and uncured pepperoni are good for the price, and only take 12 minutes to pop in the oven.

Cake like brownies are usually due to overstirring the batter. Keep it to 100 stirs or less. It helps if you mix your wet and dry ingredients separately first before combining. That way you're not trying to beat the egg while also incorporating the dry ingredients, which will take too many stirs.

Cake brownies suck. You could salvage it by putting frosting on it if you want, or just some whipped cream or something. Like someone else said it's probably from too much flour or a leavening agent which proper brownies don't need. Surprisingly the best brownie recipe I've found is one from the Walmart brand of cocoa powder, though their cocoa powder actually isn't very good and I'd recommend using another brand. They come out perfectly fudgy.

It's more expensive to initially buy the ingredients but it gets cheaper in the long run because you get more meals out of it, and generally cheaper premade food skimps on the things you should be eating more of and it has more cheap filler. That's why most frozen pizza has a thick crust and not very much cheese.

Thank you for at least being realistic. Stocking a pantry sucks, and requires a knowledge base. You have to refuse going out with people or having another food craving because you've chosen that you're going to eat whatever you bought, damn the consequences. Your friends want to hit the bar? Nope, can't, expiring produce.

>most retarded shit i see is when my roommate wants to make tacos so he goes out to buy an entire head of lettuce
He should buy a smaller portion of lettuce, but at that point he's not saving money. I'm not coming at you specifically, but cooking at home to save money better mean you're scraping by for your family or prefer being alone.

>Home cooking isn't necessarily just about saving money. It's about investing in developing a skill that makes you independent of the system. Society could break down tomorrow and other people are just going to starve because the only cooking skill they have is pressing numbers on a microwave.

Dough for one large pizza is easily less than a dollar even when I use semolina and organic flour.

Cheese is expensive but I like to use 1/8 lb
mozzarella and 1/8 lb provolone per pizza. Prices vary, I usually shop sales and buy bulk: 2$ per pie is about right but 3$ would be reasonable with extra cheese and some parm or Romano

I like the boars head pepperoni stick because I am not that poor use a quarter or a third of it: 2$

Slice black olives from a bulk jar : 50 cents
Sesame seeds for crust: 25 cents
Fuck ton of garlic: 25 cents
