Why is dulce de leche not popular in america? This stuff beats maple syrup any day

Agreed, it's probably because it's a niche thing you can't find anywhere. I only see it at Spanish grocery stores and as an ice cream flavor.

You would think volcano sauce is mild if you grew up putting hot peppers in everything to cover up the taste of rotten food. I'm used to eating subtle flavors. For example we had steak basically multiple times a week growing up (parents made over $48,000/yr, wealthy white neighborhood), and all we put on it was salt and literally nothing else because good first world meat doesn't need anything else.

I assure you my gut would not react well to your third world "pretty much candy".

>What do with all these cans of dulce
Spoonful in coffee. Use as hybrid butter/syrup replacement on pancakes. Depression era Grandma would serve canned milk on cake*; dulce de leche would be lovely. Dollop on a toasted english muffin.

Basically anywhere you might use table butter and the sweetness wouldn't be detrimental, you can use a spoon of dulce de leche.

*She would frost a fancy cake if it was for an occasion or "for company". A cake made today, to be "a little something after supper", and "for family, not company" didn't get frosting or powdered sugar (freshness didn't warrant it), but would be served with a bit of condensed milk. Nothing fancy; pretty sure she was just making a Jiffy yellow cake, again... "family, not company", so enjoyable and nice, but no extra effort to try and impress.

In my country, the best dulce de leche is made with sour raw milk (that is milk that they let sit for one day or so till begin to go sour). The final product is more tasty and buttery than the one make with regular milk.

But the process is exactly like that: milk, sugar and a lot of time.
